Can anyone recommend a good independent college counselor to advise us on our son's college list?

He goes to a large nyc public high school with very poor guidance and has a very uneven GPA - we’re having a hard time judging which schools are safety, target and reach. He knows what type of school he wants to go to (small liberal arts college) but not what is possible. Thanks so much for any advice.

Talk to people you know especially people with slightly older kids who no longer care about giving out this information.

Check the LAC websites and read through the LAC threads here on CC. Save some money!

This is a highly recommended counselor who helps friends of mine on the upper east side. I do not personally know her or use her. I’m not sure how much she charges, but her services are not free. Can’t hurt to reach out and ask.

Go to the iecaonline website. Those counselors meet strict requirements and are passionate about what they do.

thanks!

@cbdnyc, I sent you a PM.

It was some years back, but we were pleased with the advice we received from Dave Berry, who was the founder of College Confidential. I believe you can reach him now through College Karma. https://www.collegekarma.com/college_counseling/counseling_director.htm

In Brooklyn, Rachel Coates: www.educoates.com/. @cbdnyc, feel free to PM me if you would like to discuss our experience.

^^ Rachel Coatesis familiar with the situation of the student at a large NYC public high school, with a mixed transcript, and getting assembly-line (at best) college advising at school. She has a bunch of different options for advising and can give your son a good reality check, delivered in positive manner.

We used http://AdmissionsIntel.com and worked with Craig. He asked us many questions and gathered a lot of information from us before the meeting, all of which helped him get to know our son and perfectly gauge what was a safety, target, and reach was for him - all during the first meeting. Good luck.
