Since money is not an issue, what about the University of Michigan, Ross? I’m sure they would love to charge you OOS Tuition. Outstanding Business Program and very nice College Campus/College Town. Might even work out less expensive than NYU. A very diverse company recruiting group.
You can consider Lehigh, Villanova, BC, Fordham (has non-binding EA so could be a good safety), Tulane (also has non-binding EA).
@Psata82 Yeah Ross is amazing, but I don’t think I would get in pre admit and the internal transfer rate from CAS to Ross is only 40% so the odds aren’t amazing. Great school tho
@SternBusiness Are Lehigh, Bucknell, University of Rochester and Boston College on your list? Which schools without business programs? Colgate, any NESCAC schools, Holy Cross or Lafayette? Anything along those lines?
@BatesParent2019 Colgate is the only school up their that I may consider applying to. I don’t like the lehigh/bucknell location and I loved UofR but it may be too cold in the winter. I was thinking about applying to Colgate, but I may actually decide not to. Im not a big fan of LAC.
What about an LAC bothers you?
@BatesParent2019 Im neutral towards LAC in the south (emory, which I might apply to) and on the west coast,but I just feel that LAC in the Northeast are just so preppy and filled with rich arrogant kids. Most are also freezing during the winter.
Emory is a research university, good idea to apply there however.
The weather is what it is but you might find an upstate ny or new england winter more enjoyable because of the winter activities than having nothing to do in NYC in the winter.
Some of the schools are snooty but not all of the students. I think that is a stereotype.
@BatesParent2019 Yeah I guess probably just a stereotype, but they just remind me too much of what my town is like currently in NJ. I would rather go somewhere out of my comfort zone and try something new
I know how you feel we live in NJ too. Where my son is going has kids from all 50 states and over 40 countries in his class so he is escaping NJ by going to Maine.
Yeah I can’t really tell I if enjoy living in NJ as it is the only place I have ever lived, so I would like to experience see what else the country has to offer. Maine sounds nice, but too cold for me haha
Look into the Midwestern Flagships, Elon, Tulane, Penn State Smeal, USCarolina Business, UMD Smith, UMass Commonwelath Honors +
Isenberg, Bentley, Bryant, Babson (the last 4 might be too cold).
Any university in Texas is unlikely - it’s very hard to get in OOS.
Bump
You are going to drive yourself crazy.
Here is the deal. Since you want to major in business and since you are aiming at top schools, you will need a wide group to ensure you have a choice in the top tier. That means ,unfortunately, location and weather are secondary considerations. Many kids from New Jersey have survived a Cornell winter so I will bet that with the right outerwear you can too.
Despite your high stats, chances are not every box is going to be marked “perfect” when you go through the list of acceptances.
If you really want to try something new, take NYU off your list and really do it.
You have great prospects at truly top schools so focus on that, 5 - 7 schools, then focus on a handful of truly great “second tier” names again, 5-7 names, and one to three safeties of which TCNJ should be one.
Forget weather, forget location. These are nonsense considerations for such an important decision.
@SternBusiness
Take a good look at UMass Amherst Isenberg School of Management. There is something extraordinary happening there. We have toured dozens of schools with my three children and nothing compares to the enthusiasm and level of engagement that we encountered there. We were all taken by surprise and proceeded to compare every other school against what we witnessed there.
My D was expecting to go to an LAC, as we all have in our family, and got in to her #1 choice but she’s breaking the mold because of Isenberg. She’s also in at the Commonwealth Honors College and excited about that program as well. Those two programs at UMass Amherst run with any of the top schools mentioned here, and there is no “entitlement” allowed! And the great thing is that, as in all large research universities, you can pair a second major outside of business with anything you’re interested in (political science, CS, english, etc.) if you have the drive.
As for your stats, your testing is great but your gpa is a bit low. Even on a pure 4.0 scale you’re at risk and that will not get you into the CHC program. You might be able to get in to one of respected undergrad B-programs though if you add in some great or interesting ECs and write a powerful essay. Coming in from out of state you cannot trust in the average gpa mentioned as big state schools are heavily weighted with instate gpa scores. You’re not taking apples to apples here. For instance, an “average” gpa in Massachusetts will most likely not line up with the “average” gpa of South Carolina, Indiana, etc., plus there’s less spaces for OOS so you have to up your stats.
Take a look at the Bloomberg Undergraduate Business School rankings which has a lot of good information. Best of luck.
@Actor123 Thanks. I will take a look.
