^ Very nice. I liked that.
No one has mentioned UNC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. Really phenomenal. State school, conservatory atmosphere.
Yep, filmmakers are seeking lower cost areas to film…Canada, and other cheaper places.
Very good thread and will read all and investigate. THANK-YOU. @mom2collegekids he is SO against “following his brother” but perhaps if I put him into contact with someone who followed that path at UA, he could get excited about it? It would be a bonus for me to have them “together”
OP, if you are FL residents then check out University of Central Florida in Orlando. Their admission stats are pretty competitive: mid 50% is 27 ACT/1960 SAT/3.7 - 4.0 GPA (recalculated). But kids with lower stats just aren’t admitted for fall semester - usually they come in summer or spring. So it’s possible to be admitted even if you aren’t the best student.
UCF has a pretty cool/up-and-coming film school located in the School of Visual Arts and Design. Blair Witch was a project created by UCF alums. They do have direct admit but I think you have to include a reel for that. You can also be admitted to the university as a pre-major then apply directly to film in sophomore/junior year. He’d take his pre-reqs and some Gen. Eds during the meantime. The advantage of UCF is that it’s a genuine university with a lot going on at SVAD and other schools.
^___ I second the recommendation for UCF. Fairly competitive admissions, though.
I’m curious why you second the recommendation for UCF? My son has applied to FSU and is about to apply to UCF as well. With the annual rankings and strong alumni base in the industry, FSU has been his first choice all along. UCF is his second choice. But, only because in-state Florida public school choices are pretty limited for a film major. In your opinion, what makes UCF a strong choice for him (other than locale)?
Also, since both programs are very competitive, he is looking at another option. The University of Tampa has a film major. It is a BA program instead of a BFA and I believe it is not limited access like the other two. Do you know anything about that school and their film program?
Truthfully, if he doesn’t get accepted into FSU on the first try my vote will be that he stays home for a year and finishes up his AA transfer degree (with dual enrollment and AP classes, he will be close). After that, he can try again as a transfer.
