Do they include classes like French, Photography, AP Computer Science, etc? This is my mid-year report, can anyone convert this to UMich GPA:

AP Stat - A
AP BC Calc - B
AP Physics - B
Research Design (H) - A
Engineering Science - B
Honors English - A
Honors World History - A

Anyway, thanks to anyone who can answer my questions. The first deals with me wanting to calculate my UMich GPA for the previous years, and the second to see if I should send my midyear report. Thanks!

UMich GPA only includes core classes i.e. math, english, language, science, and history. AP Stat, AP BC Calc, AP Physics, Engineering Science, Honors English, and Honors World History are all core classes. From those classes, you would have a 3.5 UMich GPA.

I'm not quite sure what that Research Design course is all about. Is it a math course? I doubt it would be considered core, though.

Research Design is a required class here for this program - it basically involves doing a research project, I didn't think it would count. I was sort of hoping Engineering Science wouldn't count either, but oh well.

Anyway, does AP Computer Science count as core? This is a big deal to me, because I have four semesters of that, and without it being counted... my GPA would plummet. Thanks.

It seems to me that AP Comp Sci would be considered more of a "core" class than Engineering science. At my high school, computer science classes are under the heading of the math department, and I'm sure it's like that at other schools. In that instance, it's counted as a "core" class because it's a math class.

Okay, I was deferred today; I will send in my midterms tomorrow. I have two questions:

If my old GPA was ~3.3UW or so (SAT was 1410 M+V), what is the chance I get in with those midterm grades?

If I get in, how much will I probably have to wait? What are the average wait times for deferred people, basically.

Anything that's not a core curriculum class isn't counted. If it's an elective, as in something you're choosing to take, it's likely to not be counted (computer science, psychology, commonly not counted). Math, Science, Foreign Language, English, and Social Studies are counted. The weight is taken out, as are the -'s and +'s. An A- in French 2 would be a 4.0, but a B+ in French 2 AC would be a 3.0.

oh by the way i was deferred today as well. im out of state. are their decisions gonna be based only on these grades? or will they look at our sat/act scores again

AP Psychology doesn't count as social science? Which courses are considered as social science then?

"Recommendations: Request recommendations from your high school counselor and one of your teachers in a core academic subject (that means math, science, history or social sciences, English, foreign language, or computer programming, but not fine arts, athletics, religion, or business)."
-- from U of M's 2005-06 application for undergraduate admission

History or Social Sciences means like Modern Civilization, Early Civilization, African Civilization, etc. Social Studies. Psychology is an elective, not a core class. You're learning about the human mind, not of history and how people's lifestyles were in different eras.

I presume you are aware of U of M's Area Distribution requirement ... LSA students are required to take 30 credits in Natural Science (NS), Social Science (SS) and Humanities (HU).

Social Science courses include economics, psychology, political science, geography/geoscience, etc. History is a hybrid; some history courses are classified as SS and some as HU.

Now unless you are telling me that high school courses are different, I don't see why AP Psychology should not be counted as a core subject.

Yeah A2, I would likely say psych will be core unless you can prove otherwise. Your expertise seems to originate from your own view of psychology rather than how the university sees it.

I know that in college it's a required core classes, but I at my high school it's counted as an elective, and you don't get credit in a core area for it.

At my high school, it was considered a social science. It wasn't required but either was math beyond two years or science beyond three years, but certainly AP calculus and AP biology would go in to the GPA.
