Hello friends,
I am going to join distance learning course but before joining I want to know the disadvantages of it. So I can well be prepared for it and find out some solutions to solve future problems. If you people have any idea, please help me in this matter.
Thanks a lot!!
Distance classes can be very different from one another. Some are basically independent study online classes. Some have instructors who work really hard to get the students in the class to interact. It’s hard to say what your class will be like. The main disadvantage might be that if you enjoy the face-to-face interaction of live classes, you might feel less than inspired by a distance course. And you might not put enough effort into it. Or you might end up neglecting it completely. And then, if it’s a course that gives a grade, you might end up with a black mark on your record. You have to be motivated to work as hard as you would for any other class. Distance classes can be wonderful experiences, but you should try to find out as much as you can about the specific class you are planning to take. Who is providing the class you are thinking of joining? I think you’d get more useful comments if you gave us more details.
It really depends on the school you attend. My school (Grand Canyon University) is pretty nice in terms of distance learning. There are 3 semesters per school year and each semester is divided into two 8-week learning periods. Each learning period you can have 2 classes (considered full time student status). Every school week (Monday to Sunday) we have discussion questions that we have to answer and we comment each others answers. Participation is worth 15% of our final grade in the class so that’s a good incentive to get in and talk, lol. Every week we also have our assignment that we have to do and it’s usually due by Sunday. There are no “final exams” but the teachers work us enough to make up for it lol. I like attending school this way because I don’t have to worry about getting to a class on time. I can study how, when, and where I want. I am a good self-learner anyway so I don’t miss being in a classroom. The best perk I can think of is being able to attend class in your pj’s (or whatever).
This is only my experience at my school. Which school are you planning on attending? Maybe someone who goes there can give you specific details. Good luck!
Hello;
I am an online student at The Rochester Institute of Technology and to state it simply I love it but there are a few disadvantages: 1) You can not easily ask a classmate a question like “what did you get on number 6” on an assignment just before the due date. 2) Team Projects can become very frustrating when someone does not do their part and you can not reach out touch them. 3) I have not found a way to have a study gourp.
Advance planning. Both the instructors and students involved in distance learning may need to make sacrifices at times to get things done in time.
Distance learning does not offer immediate feedback. In a traditional classroom setting, a student’s performance can be immediately assessed through questions and informal testing. With distance learning, a student has to wait for feedback until the instructor has reviewed their work and responded to it.
That it is long distance.
I’ve been going to UMUC, taking online courses, for a year now and I like it very much. I take some face-to-face courses as a nondegree student with a local community college.
Each class, each instructor, is different. At UMUC participation (discussion forum) is very important if you want a good grade. Some instructors will mandate you answer each posted question and respond to at least one other classmate - responses are usually expected to be thorough and engaging.
I’ve found most online courses to be time demanding. Most of my professors gave lots of homework - moreso than face-to-face classes. I usually find myself working ahead as much as I can so that I can have some time for myself later.
If you have good self discipline and time management skills, you’ll be all right. If you’re the type who likes to wait til the weekend to get your work done, you might find yourself under some pressure.
I love it because I can answer questions online while at work and set up my assignments to fit my schedule and meet the deadlines.
There are innumerable advantages of acquiring an Online Degree. Most importantly you are studying while being at the comfort of your home, it gives you the flexibility to save your commuting time, you can study at your own convenience without being over burdened with class timings & all, also you don’t have to reschedule your social life considering class timings early in the morning or late at night.
I don’t see much of disadvantages in acquiring Online Education, other than for some people it is difficult to study while being there in a class physically.
Here is a good article about the advantages and disadvantages of an online degree:
