Can AP credit fulfill writing requirement for a transfer student?

Quick question: Would 5's on the AP Lit and the AP Lang exams be able to get me out of the writing requirement? Or do I have to somehow fit that in before I transfer?

Nope, you’ll have to take a class that will transfer to writ-140 to fulfill the first half of the writing requirement. The second half, writ-340, you have to take at usc.

Thanks. That’s kinda ridiculous though…

Well USC freshmen can’t pass out of the Writing requirements with AP scores, so I don’t know why you’d think it’s ridiculous that transfer students would be allowed to.

I think it’s kind of obnoxious that freshmen can’t pass out of the writing requirements. If a freshman got a five on both Lit and Lang, they’re probably pretty proficient at the english language. I’ve heard that professors make it hard to get an A as well.

Writ140 really isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. You just have to make sure you choose a Category 6 GE that actually interests you since you have to write about it. I only got a 3 on the AP Lit exam and didn’t even take AP Lang and I got an A- without much work at all.

Writ-140 and AP Land/Lit have about zero in common besides the fact that you write essays in both.

As much as I would have liked to have my AP Lang get me out of 140, the classes are completely different.

I didn’t think they made it exceptionally difficult to get an A in 140, either. It’s college, and you can’t expect that meeting minimum requirements gets you an A.

Interesting. I’ll keep that in mind. I just found it a little frustrating that they’re going to let me pass out of like 5 classes that aren’t electives and they won’t give me english. I’ll probably ask around about professors before I sign up for classes too.
