Thank you. I think I meet CS requirements as FL.
What is UC? Are you in California?
I would worry about your English skills. If you are a second language speaker, please work on your English grammar skills. Is Chinese your first language?
Sorry and yes. I am in state of California.
@Gumbymom do,the CA community colleges require foreign language for admission?
If not, could this student do the community college to UC route?
Chinese is not my first language. I went to school in US from childhood. I know my English is not good… but I am not an international student.
I’d also make sure you don’t need foreign language for HS graduation requirements. (I don’t know the CA requirements.)
This is definitely a way but it would only possible from CC to UC, right? Is it possible to transfer from CC to other colleges?
I would sit down with your guidance counselor and see what solutions they have for you.
Crazy to me that a state that is so obsessed with A-G classes that your HS does not require a foreign language to graduate. The only kids I know that dont need a foreign language are kids with an IEP/504 (A student with dyslexia can get a waiver of sorts)
You have loads of options.
I prefer the community college route as they are not difficult classes and you can bang out 1 whole year in one semester. With a community college on a quarter system there are so many choices. You could also do something like Silicon Valley High School
They only offer Spanish and ASL but Im sure you could look at other online hs that will give you hs credit. You can complete 1 full year of language at Silicon Valley by doing both semesters in spring semester.
If you can actually graduate your hs without a foreign language, that is not required to enter a CA cc. And yes you can transfer to any college from a CA cc.
The thing to keep in mind is your application will be viewed in the context of other students from your high school and geographic area/state. You will never be penalized for not taking classes that are not offered at your high school. If your high school offers 4 years of foreign language, your classmates took it and you did not, you run the risk of just not being as competitive an applicant, especially at highly selective schools.
You really do need to meet with your guidance counselor, review your options and come up with a plan.
No, CA CC’s do not require a FL for admission. What I do not understand is that @bobthebest attends a CA HS? where most HS’s adhere to the UC/CSU a-g course requirements.
According to the CA Dept of Education only 1 course of LOTE or VPA or Career Tech course is required to get a diploma so LOTE is not a CA HS graduation requirement.
What public high school in CA does not offer foreign language courses!
@bobthebest do you attend a public high school?
I agree that you need to speak to your school counselor about this issue. What exactly have you been taking to fill your high school schedule? All science and math courses? Or what?
Did you fulfill the arts requirement for UCs?
You mean for CA hs, FL is not requirement of graduation? That may be why UC accept AP exam as FL requirement. But other state college require FL, it is so complicated…
No.
I fill half of my courses with English/history/social study, and other half math/science. Arts is required so I 've taken at 9th grade, also 2 PEs are all taken.
All is not lost. You have options, but you need to get on it now since you are already a Junior.
Your question "You mean for CA hs, FL is not requirement of graduation?
That is correct. Some kids are not college bound but for college bound students that is a different story.
Yes, if you did not indicate to your counselor that you intended to apply to colleges, you may have been placed into the vocational category. What I don’t understand is why PE was prioritized over FL.
Thank you, I have sent out email to colleges that I am interested in about this FL requirement, I will talk to my hs counselor about options to fulfull it.
That is my bad, school planner has given a list of (possible) course schedule for each year, most of classes listed are required: like PE is required for 9th, English for all 4 years and history for 3 years. It listed PE for 10th grade so I thought it is required, so I took it.
