Can Applications be faxed in?

Tomorrow, Jan 1, is the deadline for many college applications. For those unable (for any reason) to use the Common App website to fill out and submit an application, does anyone know whether the application and supplement can be submitted via fax? Clearly, the payment will follow. I am thinking in particular of Chicago, which actually has a January 3 deadline, but impossible of course to send anything NOW that will arrive by THEN.

I’m pretty sure they have an admission blog. Why don’t you go ask there or at least in their CC forum?

Well, I have a bunch . . .

On the websites, “fax” never seems to be mentioned by admissions as acceptable, one way or the other. Virginia?

I have never heard of fax being an acceptable option for submitting an application, in part because of the pymt issue. Either you are submitting it online and making a credit card pymt of you are mailing it with a check attached. I think the solution is to submit it online - there is no reason that I can think of to prevent someone from submitting online for a 1/3 deadline. if you don’t have a functioning computer - I’m sure you know someone who does.

We’re paperless. We want you to submit the Common App online. We’ll take paper applications mailed (not faxed) if students are without any computer access. However, the post offices are now closed until Monday, so you will miss our deadline (January 1st).

If you don’t have internet access or a computer at home, could you go to a coffee shop or library to get online? Most libraries have public computers with internet access.

But internet access doesn’t seem like an issue since you’re posting on College Confidential. :)

Since the websites of the colleges I am interested in just say the application is “due” by January 3, I think I will fax the application in on Monday and make a same day wire transfer payment for the application fee (with the receipt attached to the application). I can’t use the common app submit feature, as it is disabled in my account at this point. Chicago is one such school (I will post this note on their forum to see if there is any objection). For all of you who are worried about mis-spelling on your common app, Chicago’s admissions web site says applications are due on Sunday, January 3. This must be Chicago’s own version of “Find x” –

Jan. 3 College: Undergraduate Application Deadline: Second Round Full-Time MBAWed.

I really think you should contact your schools about this. As I wrote above, Chicago has an admission blog.

Why don’t you submit a help request to fix your Common App account?

OP, The Jan. 3 deadline is most likely a postmark date not a receive by date. Go on the school’s website and read through carefully to verify this. If you cannot submit electronically then you should download the entire application and send it via snail mail, with a check, on Monday. Take it in to the post office yourself and have them postmark it with the date in front of you. I can’t imagine that the admissions offices at these schools are equipped to handle students faxing in applications. I would strongly advise against doing so.
