Can applying to a college multiple times (freshman, transfer as frosh, transfer as soph) hurt chances later (i.e. for grad school)? Is it even relevant? I know they ask you on the app if you've applied to the school before.

Hmm, I don’t think it’d hurt for grad school but I don’t actually know. I mean as long as you seriously put effort into your application each time all I’d think it’d do, if anything, is show that you have a strong interest in the school.

I think the reason they ask you if you’ve applied to the school before is so that they can look at your file from last time and/or avoid creating duplicate files. They may want to make sure they didn’t have a deal-breaker issue last time with your application, or want to make sure all of the information is accurate between this time and last time (dishonesty check). Not that I know they actually do any of that but it’s feasible.

Or, like I said, they could just be trying to avoid creating duplicate files for the same student. But no, I don’t think it’d particularly hurt.

Graduate school and undergrad are totally different processes. It won’t hurt.
