I'm applying to Pomona, and recently contacted the coach about potentially playing volleyball there. Though they don't give you scholarships, if a coach likes you does that help you get in?? I'm going to need all the help I can get getting into Pomona :)

Yes. If the coach wants you, it will help get you in.

I know the Pomona coaches in some other sports have very little pull with admissions. They certainly will pull for you if they want you for the team, but their influence is not very great. Perhaps volleyball is different.

It might help a bit but read this

The Student Life: Sports

It helps, but how much is not always clear. If you want to see where your sport will get the best "heads up" in admissions, look at the D-3 rankings from the prior years for the top schools in your sport. It is no accident that Kenyon has headed the D-3 swim list for all of these years. They give swimmers a BIG bump up. You do not get to the top of the D-3 athletic list without help from the admissions dept.
