can being an athlete be a hinderance?

If you don’t cut the mustard for the team will it hurt you in general admissions? Will they think you are not as interested in the school without the sport?

are you a legacy if your parent went as a a graduate student? How about aunt or uncle?

No, tons of applicants do high school sports but have no interest in being recruited. Many of these students choose to join club or intramural sports once they are in college. If you are trying to be a recruited for your sport, you can find more information or ask more specific questions on this forum http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/athletic-recruits/

As for legacy status, that will depend on the school. Check the admissions website for each college you are interested in.

thank you for the link. this is a different scenario where one tries to get recruited, reach out to the coach ect.
but they are not interested in you as a player. Will the school think you are not interested if they don’t recruit you? I would like to get recruited but I’d still want to go to the school if I didn’t make the team.

Recruiting is about them showing interest in you.

No, they won’t think you’re disinterested if you aren’t recruited but still apply. But it’s up to you to show your interest in the right ways. Make sure you’re informed about what your targets are really looking for.

i’m a novice at this, can you be more specific?

As sophie mentioned, you need to read up on what the colleges themselves say, whether it’s about legacy, the kinds of students they want, courses they recommend you have in hs, programs, etc.

No, it won’t hurt you at all.

If the coach isn’t interested in you as a player, admissions would never even know.

thanks for letting me know.

Research with the school the best format to get coaches to come watch you play and to send in video of your highlights. Your HS coaches should know how to do all of this and should be a great guidance for you. Also if you play select sports, your coach can help you. Participate in as many showcase tournaments as you can.
Good Luck

@Thelma2 The OP isn’t asking how to be recruited – there’s no indication of that. OP is wondering if his/her non-recruit level sports involvement might be seen as a negative – which is silly.

No, actually we are interested in getting recruited and will actively seek it though we would still be interested in the school if the coach isn’t interested.

Google preferred walkon. In some cases, the coach will flag certain files, which helps your admission chances. For example, if a coach is allowed 6 slots for players, and you are the 7-9th player on the list, the coach can add a letter or rec to your file. It may not necessarily help, but it certainly won’t hurt your chances.

If the coach never communicates any interest in you to the AC, it’s not going to hurt your chances either. However, the focus of your application/essays should always be on something other than sports (imo). My son was an athletic recruit and was told by the AC representative NOT to write about sports. This person went on to say that she preferred reading about the All-Conference football player that loves poetry and history vs a player elaborating on his game winning touchdown.
