I am a Canadian citizen living in California and I'm very confused about this financial aid stuff. So can somebody please clarify for me what kind of financial aid I am qualified for? I am here on a TD (TN-Dependent) Visa, so I don't have a US Social Security number and will have to get a Student Visa once I am accepted to a college.

Thanks in advance!

Some American universities offer need based financial aid to Canadian students (my understanding is that for admissions, Canadians are put in the international pool, but for financial aid, they are put in the domestic pool). All of the Ivies except for Brown offer need based. There are probably others, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. You'll have to go to the college websites to see what their policies are.

Other universities don't offer need based aid to Canadians, but allow Canadians, along with Americans and other internationals to compete for merit based aid. For example, at Boston University, all students, regardless of citizenship, are eligible for the Trustee (full tuition) and University (1/2 tuition) scholarships.

^ Thanks for that.

I probably can't qualify for any merit-based scholarships though. My grades are pretty mediocre.

Anyone know if we can apply for US scholarships?
