this thread will just depress us regular people

the whole CC board depresses regular people.

^^^^ i agree...

ditto........

it's QUALITY not quantity--you have to be able to explain, in some way, why you do your EC's and how they are important to you when applying to top schools. If you do it to look good then you most likely won't convey their importance as well.

Here are mine

Constitution Team (1st state, 4th nationals) 12th
Technology Student's Association (1st place state photoshop) 10th
Tae Kwon Do (1st dan, assistant instructor) - 9, 10, 11th
Kung Fu - 12th
Tai Chi- 12
National Honor Society (lots of tutoring) - 11th, 12th
Movie Club President - 12th
U.I.L Math - 9-12
U.I.L Science - 9-12
U.I.L Comp Sci - 10th
U.I.L Team Chem - 9-12
Art Club - Treasurer - 9th
Build Computers - 9-12th
Humor Column Writer for school - 12th
Drawing/Painting - 9-12
Cooking - 9-12 (I would have mini Iron Chef competitions with friends)
National Hispanic Institute Coach - 10th
Violin - 10, 11th

these are most. I mainly focused on the math/science/art aspects because I love em. Martial arts, Art, Cooking, and studying math/science are my main hobbies.

"it's QUALITY not quantity--you have to be able to explain, in some way, why you do your EC's and how they are important to you when applying to top schools."

sephiroth, how would you recommend doing that? Would you need to explain/show that in your essay?

maybe explain WHY you are interested in the particular ec

how it will help you later on in life

what struggles you overcame to become good at ________ OR talk about your natural talent in _________

Well, for my Rice essay I talked about my friends, family, and passion for cooking. For MIT, I focused on my passion for learning using my childhood--i wanted to be an astronaut because of Apollo 13, an animator because of rouroni kenshin, a game designer because of Chrono Trigger, etc.

Maybe even just send a supplemental essay?

lol.thank you guys

anymore?

I used a resume format in Acing the COllege Application. It consisted of a table with activity, number of hours, years participated, then a box of explaination.

For activities like Ed in Chief for the paper, I didn't bother to write much or anything. For activities that were not self-explanatory, I wrote about my specific duties and accomplishments. i.e. I organized a school wide assembly and brought in X speaker, I organized a fundraiser that brought in X amount of dollars, etc.

For a summer program, I highlighted the difficulty of getting in with the acceptance rate. I really reccomend this table format since it forces you to get rid of or lump together meaningless ECs to cut it down to three pages.

NHS is pretty useless... sure, it forces you to do community service, but just listing significant community service is far more impressive than NHS, IMHO. I did throw it into my resume because it fit...

My ECs looked something like this -
Newspaper Editor
Gay Straight Alliance Founder and President
Human Rights Club VP
Marching Band Color Guard Captain
French Club Treasurer
Enviro Club Treasurer
Literary Magazine, Prose Editor
Karate Black Belt, Instructor, Travel Team

Freelance journalist for local paper
Garment Design Internship
Cashier
Sold handmade goods online
Freelance webdesign

Then I listed community service and where I was published, plus a conference or two. All of these were accompanied by more in depth explanations of what I did exactly.

Haha, here's one that I think might make commoners a little less depressed (though maybe not by much) ^^

~ECs~
