Can coding be used as an activity on the common app?

I have been using Codecademy to learn how to code for the past year. I want to put it in my activities list so colleges understand that I have some experience with coding, especially since I want to major in Computer Science. Should I add this as an activity? Thanks!

If it has become a hobby or something you leaned in your free time then sure! List it!

Coding is an excellent thing to list! In today’s job market, coding is essential for almost every job and colleges know this. I’d recommend sending a coding example of a project that you’ve worked on along with an explanation/summary of the project and your motivation of it. The Common App has an “additional information” section that I think would be perfect for this.

I agree. My daughter is a freshman studying Computer Engineering. All her ECs were all sports related. She coded as a hobby – this was the ONLY indication of direct experience with computers besides a standard but rigorous math-science track at her high school – but no CompSci courses at all!

You bet! You have self-taught yourself an important skill. I’m sure it took practice, determination, and resourcefulness - all qualities that enhance your application.

Where does coding belong on the common app? The “activities” section?

@gearsstudio That’s a good a place as any. Don’t be so focused on which category (activities vs. awards). If it’s obvious, choose the appropriate one. If it’s fuzzy, make your best guess and feel fine about it. Colleges understand and won’t tear up your app b/c a supposed “award” might fit better under “activities”
