So I got suspended from my University about one month into the school year. I am currently a freshman, and am not allowed to return until next semester. I want to know whether or not schools I apply for would be able to find out i've been suspended from this institution. Since I have no credits yet, would I be considered a first time entry student or a transfer student?
Also, if schools could see it, how would the suspension affect my chances of admission? I was arrested for a little bit a weed.
Thanks in advance for any advice, all is appreciated.

College applications generally ask you either whether you have taken any college courses or been dismissed or suspended from any college. Other ways to learn you went to a college include: (a) what if you need recommendation letters; are your high school teachers that you could ask for recommendations ignorant of your having been accepted to a college for this year and if not how are you going to get them to submit a letter to support a “freshman” application; (c) some colleges require interviews, what are you are going to tell the interviewer if he asks what you have been doing since high school; (d) colleges require high school transcripts from your high school and some a counselor’s recommendation; your high school may not submit either for a “freshman” application if it knows you are already in college. Undoubtedly there are other ways the college may become aware of the truth. Be aware if you misrepresent to a college in the application process anything of importance (which would include your having attended and been suspended by another college) and the college admits you and then finds out the truth, it can (a) withdraw your admission, (b) expel you from college even if does not find out until a week before you are due to graduate from college.

In other words, it would be unwise to attempt a deception. Yes, being suspended for a drug violation can be a reason for another college to reject you. Some will not be lenient; some may actually consider you. Either way you will be better off being up front with what occurred.

Also, you may have other serious issues. You say you were “arrested” but do not give result. A drug conviction can result in your not being able to qualify for financial aid.

Many schools report student enrollment to the National Student Clearinghouse. I work at a university, and we are required to report enrollment monthly, however we usually report twice a month.

Did you have any Financial Aid at your prior school? If you received any Federal money (Pell, Stafford Loans, Parent Plus) then the school also reports your aid. If you apply to a different school and apply for Financial Aid, you will show up under their Transfer Monitoring regulations.

Usually applications include some legal verbage about filling out the application completely and truthfully. If it asks you to list all schools you have attended, and it is discovered later you did not answer truthfully, you could be suspended again.

As has been mentioned, the National Student Clearinghouse will quickly show anywhere you apply that you’ve attended a prior school. So you’ll be rejected/rescinded if you “forget” to mention this. Once prior schools are mentioned, you will be required to submit official transcripts which will show your suspension.
