Can Computer Engineers work as Software Engineers?

Lets say I have a BS in Comp E. with a minor in CS, would that enable me to work as a software engineer? I ask this because it seems there are ridiculous amount of jobs available in the software field compared to hardware and growing faster and faster each year. For a current Comp. E major, it seems logical to minor in CS or is it completely worthless?

Depends - if you have a good selection of languages and larger project experience you’ll be fine. If you are the ‘1 semester of Python and one of C’ like our new intern, well…

Don’t fall for the ‘teach yourself C++’ siren call. Know the basics in OS’s, networks, databases, and so on and it’ll be fine.

Depends on which courses you take and their content. The CS courses in operating systems, algorithms, networks, databases, security/cryptography, and software engineering or course with large project are among the more immediately applicable ones for most industry jobs. Of course, CS can be self-educated to some extent, but if you are at a college with CS courses, you may as well take the courses when you have a chance to learn with the assistance of instructors.

So far I’ve had 3 quarters of python, 2 quarters of C++, 1 quarter of java, currently taking C and will take 2 more quarters of it. The computer engineering curriculum requires data management, computer networks and I’ll be taking classes on data structures and algorithms, software engineering and operating systems as part of the CS minor. Would that be enough or should I take more CS related classes?

I used to think it doesn’t matter but lately I have researched for intern jobs at Google and such. There seems to be a preference for CS because the intern jobs looking for Computer Science/Engineering not Computer Engineering/Science.

sounds plenty enough - see if you can get some independent study or research type project to do a large scale system of some kind, If you have time take as much as you can, of course but this should be plenty good.

Will the job market continue to grow in the software field or is it just a spike that will eventually die down?

Check out the article written by Miguel Helft regarding Silicon Valley steatlth power by the recent Fortune magazine(Mar 2014). The article states,

I kind of agree with the above assessment and I think the job market will likely to continue to grow.
