Can current students please discuss pro's and con's of UMD?

If you want to make reservations for that weekend you should do it now as it will book up.
At the bookstore they will give you coupons also for like $10 extra when you sell your books back etc. really handy if you hang on to them and can find them.
My D. was in Denton last year and will be in Anne Arundel this year which is carpeted and air conditioned...YAY..
Moving in is really busy..I would advise you have 3 people. One to watch stuff, one to move car and one to move stuff up to room.
My D. and her friends go to the restaurants on rt. 1. They also eat at the nice restaurant on campus Adeles sometimes and they enjoy it.

Off campus there is a holiday inn nearby that specializes in steaks for a night on the town ..we took D. there for her birthday.
Also first day you will want to sign your son up for "terps bucks" you put $ into an account and then he does not have to carry cash..its handy to have for the student union etc. Once he is signed up (which you have to do in person) you can then add $ to his account through the internet or call..and you dont have to go back in again.
Money is refundable if you dont use it.

The terrapin points are given to the students as their meal plan. They budget these points and do lose them if they dont lose them. At the end of each budget time..kids run to the incon (not sure of spelling) and buy all kinds of stuff to use up their points..My D. came home with brillo pads, special MD cookies etc..I am like what is this!
BTW UMD has its own dairy and that is good ice cream!

One drawback with MD is the dining rooms dont open till 11am on weekends so he may want to take some energy bars if he is an early riser and likes to eat.
We are close to D. (about 40 mins) so occassionally we run hard cooked eggs, apples, etc to her.

I had lots of help at CC when D. went to college and also a ton when my other D. went to Stage Door Manor a theater camp in New York where she is now.
So its nice if my info is helping you.

I am really thrilled with what MD has to offer ..and my D. just loves it and so does everyone we know that goes there! I think your son will be very happy.

viola...how do you know what dorm your son is in? I was told housing assignments won't be available until the first week of August. Is he in a special program? Not knowing is driving my d. crazy! She doesn't go for orientation until Monday (7-26) but she has to move in during "early week" on Aug. 21....all her friends going to other colleges already know their roomate's life story and she still doesn't know anything. It would be nice to know before orientation where you'll be living. Thanks and good luck to your son.

My son knows where he is living because he's in a progam called Global Communities. He got it in the mail after being accepted. My son will also be at the orientation your daughter is attending.

I know what you mean about the waiting. My son doesn't know who his roommate will be either. I'm not sure but maybe only a certain portion of the freshman class moves in on that early date -- or is it all the freshmen? Well, here's hoping your daughter finds out about both her roommate and dorm very soon.

Hope she enjoys the orientation and has a good year.

Viola

Oh, that's why he knows. Only a certain freshmen go early, althletes, band members, etc. ...I think? She goes early b/c she's on the Md. Dance Team and they have practice ALL week. What is your son's major?

He's in the business school. His major is Accounting but of course, that may change. What about your daughter? She must be looking forward to being on the dance team. Do they perform at football games?

She's a dance major but looking to double major...in American Studies, so she'll be the the ARHU group at orientation. Yep, they perform at all the home football and men's basketball games. She's very excited...especially about basketball..she's a huge fan. It's a lot of work. She's been learning dances from a video all summer and she has two mini camps to attend before early week. AND you have to do your schedule around the practices. It's all good though...she's been wanting to do this forever and when she got picked for the squad she was beyond excited, but she'd been training and working hard for it, so I was happy all her hard work paid off. All the girls seem nice and she likes the coach...but it will be her first time away from home, so she's beginning to get a bit nervous. Fingers crossed!!!
