Question on In state and Out of State
I am a resident of TX for the last 10 years.
Now, if my daughter does Pre-Med in a college outside TX, then will she be considered as In State when applying for Medical School (based off my residence status)
OR
If she does Pre-Med outside TX, then is she considered Out of State for Medical School if wanting to get admitted in a Texas Medical school?
The above can also sway her decision towards staying in state. UT Austin is no doubt an awesome school and hopefully this can be the thing that finally convinces her.
Simply attending an undergraduate college out of state does not change the fact that she is a Texas resident for med school admissions and tuition purposes.
Here are the Texas residency rules for Texas public medical schools:

Of course, staying in Texas for undergraduate will make it easier to get to interviews at Texas medical schools.
She can remain a TX resident by retaining her TX voting registration, her license, car registration (if she has a car) and doing all the things other TX residents do. I know there is no state income tax, but if there are other things that residents do, do them. If she works while in undergrad school, file taxes in that state as a non-resident.
As long as she doesn’t give up her Texas residency, she remains a Texas residency. For instance in our case, my daughter was an Illinois resident when she applied to colleges. She goes to UT-Austin. Because UT wants to and encourages their students to gain residency and will help them to do so, she became a Texas resident. So, she had to give up her Illinois residency and is now only a Texas resident. The huge perk is that her annual tuition is now only about 13k a year vs the 46k her tuition would be (last year the savings were about $30k, this year it’ll be the $33k). She just applied for UT’s iMPA program and was accepted. Since she is currently a resident she remains a resident when she does her 5th year, even though she won’t begin that for 2 more years. If she wants to apply to a public university in Illinois for anything, she will have to come back here and give up her Texas residency.
My son will be attending University of Michigan. He will not be giving up his Illinois residency so regardless of if and when he wants to go to grad school, he’ll always be an Illinois residency, until he establishes permanent residency somewhere else.
