Can Engineering science major be accepted in to Masters in Electrical Engineering?

Hello There folks, I am very new to this so if I make mistakes I am sorry.

Ok,

I go to CUNY College of Staten Island for Engineering science with Electrical
engineering concentration. I have 1 more semester and a summer to complete me B.S. in engineering science.

My burning question is my diploma will say Engineering Science with concentration in Electrical engineering and would I be able to get into a respected graduate school in NY,NJ,CT,PA area for specific engineering program (electrical engineering masters)?

I have a 3.65 Gpa and I have transfered 3 schools and finally I am graduating very soon. ( liberal arts electives draged my gpa down, most of my important engineering courses are solid A's) I know in the past I droped about 7,8 courses and had an F once; so in the past I was a bad student but now I am doing much much better and come very close to graduating and might be able to graduate with 3.7 instead of 3.65.

(I have research experience in telecominications and nano technology and I am a pretty darn good Computer programmer as well.)

So in semester and a half I will graduate with honors ( lower level ). Do you guys also think schools might ask me to complete few courses in undergrade level?

I am uploading a link for my curriculum for you guys to see where I am coming from :

Department of Engineering Science and Physics at the College of Staten Island - CSI

I will be applying to Polytech,RPI,Colombia,Rutgers,NJIT,Stony Brook,CUNY CITY, Stevenson maybe few more..What do you think sounds reasonable?

csi engineering science program

Realistically, your best bet will be to talk with professors from your current program and see where students have gone. They’ll know what people with stats similar to yours have been able to get in the past, and will be able to give you a little bit of guidance. Heck, if you’re planning on applying for grad school you’ll need to ask them for letters of recommendation, anyway, so as might as well get that conversation started now.

I already have 6 professors of mine agreed on giving me recomendation already. I just have to tell them when I need it. In schools website it says engineering science grads went to colombia, nyu poly, stony brook , ccny … in the past but I dont know. Am I in better position than my friend who goues to CUNY City College and graduating as exact time as me who is going to be near 2.6 GPA vs my 3,6 from csi?

I think you can get into NYU Poly, NJIT, CUNY City College, and Stevens Institute. Normally your GPA would be good enough for RPI, Rutgers, and Stony Brook. But I am not sure for your case since you had dropped 7 or 8 classes in the past and received a F once. Your past history when you were a bad student will still hurt your chances. Have you taken your GRE yet? I think it is required for RPI, Columbia, Rutgers, and Stony Brook and will help improve your chances for the other four easier schools as well.

If you have no intention to pursue a PhD in EE, I would suggest you to pursue a MSCS instead as it will broaden your skills and give you more career opportunities down the road. But that’s just me.

I also think your chance for Columbia will be minimal due to your past history.

may be I should have gone to ccny’s electrical engineering program and they have better name than CSI. But, better yet most of my friends are at CCNY with lousy GPA’s, they say its harder than polu, ston etc. . Do you think will they have a chance going to colombia, rpi or poly with gpa of 2.4 or 2.5

i KNOW universities require gpa minumums for their MS degree plus Gre test.
So, I m curious; what happens to those kids who graduate from schools with very rigurus curriculum in engineering and ended graduating with very low GPA? Does it mean grad school in a decent school is a dream?

One of my friends graduated from ccny ee with 2.23 gpa and even his own school wouldnt accept him for masters in ee, Usa education is becoming more and more competion savy I guess like Europe and some other countries who dont have enough schools for demand and expectations are high

I had w’s and a F but not from CSI. My lowest grade and CSI is one B-. My bad ( dark history :)) dont show up in my CSI transcript.

Only my CSI courses and about 45 credits that was transfered to CSI back in 2 years ago.
But Yeah they can see CSI is my fourth school :(.

What do you think?

I think your past will still come back and hurt you since the schools will most likely ask you to submit transcripts from all of the schools you previously attended rather than only the school you recently attended. Yes, they will look at your records from all of the schools you attended.
