DS submitted his apps to Harvard & Duke, but opted to not answer optional essays on their supplements. However, he is now working on a required essay for another school's supplement and realizes that he should have included this as the optional essay for Harvard & Duke. Is he able to do this after he already submitted common app and supplements to these schools? He thinks not.

Unfortunately, he won’t be able to under the Common App. The supplemental forms are locked once they are sent and can no longer be edited. If you contact the school directly, they may allow you to send the essay through the mail, but its not guaranteed.

nope the app is submited, but he really should’ve answerd them because these are competative schools

I agree, but he believes the instructions when they state it is truly optional & will not hurt your chances. I pointed out to him that although it might not hurt his chances it certainly will not help his chances. However, this is a kid who has breezed through school taking the hardest course loads: all APs, & every year he was told it will be harder this year & you will have to study. He has gotten by with minimal studying and maintains highest gpa. Same with standardized tests - no prep & 36 act, 800 math, 760 cr, 750 w, 800 math II, 780 chem, 760 US hist, all 5s on calc AB, stat AP, eng lang AP, chem AP, US hist AP, and a 4 on AP euro. Also Nation Merit semifinalist. So he does not believe me when I tell him how competitive the admissions is to these schools, since we also told him every year his course load would require him to buckle down and he has not had to.

…I wish i was this kid
