If the student has done competitive gymnastics in middle school, can that be added on the EC activities list? Or, it has to be during high school years?
For college admissions purposes, your life started in HS, particularly if the MS activity did not carry over.

Only if it carried over into high school. For example, if competitive gymnastics in middle school led to coaching younger gymnasts in high school then you could mention it in that context but focus on the high school activity. Another example might be that years of competitive gymnastics in middle school led to success in cheer/diving/high jump, etc. in high school but write about the high school sport.
