I don't want this to come across as mean..but my brother isn't exactly skinny and he really wants to join the military. He is especailly interested in the Marine Academy. He has expressed concern to me regarding the physical fitness aspect of the Marines. Are overweight people ever admitted, and is it possible to successfully "make it?" Thanks a lot. I want the best for my brother, but I don't want him to get in over h is head.

The Marines do not have a academy. This is the Merchant Marine Academy.
Suggest you make sure this is the right spot.

Marines, as part of the Navy, can be commissioned through the Naval Academy. Hope that helps.

You can commission into the USMC from Kings Point. The program is fairly "popular" and numerous mids have graduated as 2nd LT's in the USMC.

All mids at KP must conform to physical standards as set by the Navy. I do not know the specifics of the USMC option, but I do know that their PT standards are higher.

DRla84...each service has their own physical requirements. To obtain an appointment to any of the Federal Academies you have to get through DoDmerb's physical. FYI, here is a link to the body-fat/weight requirements for each of the services.

However, a quick check of the football team roster indicates that these numbers are not enforced during the year, perhaps they are only checked at graduation?

Example - a 6' 0" 300lb player is 99 pounds over the maximum allowed weight listed on your chart.

Having a child at KP and a daughter who just went to Officers Candidate School and is now a 2nd Lt. in the Marines I will tell you that the Marines have tougher physical standards compared to admission to KP. But your brother can definitely get in shape. Perhaps there is a local Marine recruiting office where they help people get in shape. My daughter worked out with the recruiters for 3 months before she took her fitness exam in order to go to OCS at Quantico. At OCS they kicked it up several notches and many people didn't get through primarily due to their level of fitness. If he wants this lifestyle, he must be self motivated.

Thank you all so much! You have been very helpful. I will show my little brother all of this information and see if it is still something he wants to do.

LOL Luigi, somehow I think that all the Academies have a different weight standard for football players. There is also some formula for body fat percentage vs body weight which is probably how they get around the weight requirement :D
