I graduate in May and want to study engineering at local community college (IN) but not sure what major. Might get certificate or associate's but not sure yet.

Advisors said I could register as 'undecided' and declare major later, cuz most early courses would be general studies. Now they say I'm not eligible for financial aid cuz they won't count me as a 'degree-seeking' student. They said they couldn't verify the courses I take count toward a degree. Do they have to keep track of that detail? They know if my courses count to graduation, so why can't they keep track of this? They must track those who declae a major. My folks don't make enough money to help.

Friends who go other schools as 'undecided' get fin aid; why not this school? Is it because it's a CC? Maybe I should go where friends go but don't like that place. Maybe I just say certificate. I'm confused...please help. thank you. -mj

To receive federal aid you must be working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program and meet certain other requirements. Is this school accredited? Something doesn’t sound right as you don’t have to declare a major initially to receive aid. You should ask further questions to make sure you understand. You can read about eligiblity here:
[Student Aid on the Web](http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/aideligibility.jsp?tab=funding)

Hopefully Nikki or kelsmom can answer your question or explain what the problem might be.

Thanks for info. Yes, I’m US citizen and did register for selective service. The school is accredited, I read something about HLC in a catalog. The programs I’m interested in are in their catalog.

Besides being undecided about which engineering major, they said I have to pick certificate or degree. They said I would be considered an ‘undecided degree seeking student unsure of what degree you wanted.’ And the same response as earlier, that ‘there is not a program to go by to verify the courses you take count toward a degree.’ I thought most of the first quartr or two were general ed things anyway.

I know I want either a certificate or associate’s, but I’m not sure which. Do I just pick one to be eligible for fin aid? That doesn’t seem right. There have to be other students in the same situation.

Am I doing something wrong? Maybe they’re making a mistake or misunderstand something? Thanks -mj
