My daughter's academic advisor tells her that she cannot change one of her core classes simply because she does not like it. Is that a guideline or a rule at Fordham? Can't first semester freshmen drop and add classes -- even core classes, provided they have openings -- just like anyone else during the first week of the semester?

Im a Junior in the Gabelli School of Business at Fordham and yes the core classes are required and cannot be dropped. All students regardless of their major are required to take this core. However, dont quote me on this; but I dont see why it wouldnt be possible why your daughter couldnt take the class at a later time. However, omitting the class as a whole is not possible.

But let me refine my question for you… There are multiple classes that will fulfill any given core requirement. A student could fulfill a language requirement with French OR Spanish, for instance. . What I’m wondering is whether a first semester freshman really is restricted from changing out of one core prerequisite class – Roman History, for example – and into another class – Greek History, perhaps – that would also fill the same core requirement.

Yes, that is possible. I would talk to your daughters Dean. Their are multiple classes that fufill the requirements and she should not be restricted to take something she does not want. Here is the link btw. [Core Curriculum](http://www.fordham.edu/academics/colleges__graduate_s/undergraduate_colleg/fordham_college_at_r/core_curriculum/index.asp)

I think they discourage first semester freshmen from changing classes (and my S did not have to), but I agree that she should speak to her dean. There is no reason to take a class she doesn’t want when an equivalent and more interesting (to her) class is available. Drop/add ends on Wednesday (it comes really fast at Fordham), so it is important that she act quickly. That being said, there are some core classes that are required. I know the core changed since my S was a freshman but as an example European History was required for freshman and he had to take it despite the fact that he would have preferred American history.

I think this is the “new and improved” core.

Personally, I dislike that Fordham pre-selects the classes for the freshman students’ first semester, and would have preferred letting each student register for his/her classes as part of orientation (or even online before they arrive on campus) by providing a range of classes per core area to select from (depending on availability, of course).

But, I know my son is also going thru the drop/add process right now for his math class because he was assigned a level of calculus that he’s already take at his high school (and got a 5 on the AP exam) and is trying to get into the next level of math. If he had the option instead to choose his classes with his adviser, this might not have happened.

Thanks Bell15 and Happy1 –

Your advice did the trick. My daughter talked to the dean and was able to change classes without a problem.
