Can I actually put this on a college application?

So, the first year in my school's history, Latin students had the option to volunteer to take the National Latin Exam. We had an award ceremony, where kids received certificates for participating, and one girl received a silver medal for getting a particular score.

I scored on par with the national average, and just got a certificate that said I participated and whatnot. I don't mind. I like Latin and the test was no biggie and I didn't prepare for it or anything.

However, my principal told me that this was something that colleges would think very highly of and that it'd look "fantastic" on a college application, which is pretty bizarre, considering that I kind of just got a paper saying I participated in a 40 minute exam...

...how would I even go about putting that on a college app? I didnt even win or gain any distinction or recognition?

I wouldn’t shove the fact that you took the NLE up college admissions officers’ noses, but you should try to work it in somehow! Besides, if you take the NLE next year and get an award, then you’ll definitely be able to use it. The worst thing admissions could do is not count your participation as an award or recognition.

Um, put everything that makes you distinctive on your college app. Full stop.

Principals/teachers tend to exaggerate the effect this kind of thing will have…I wouldn’t consider it fantastic but there’s no harm in writing it down if you want.

I personally would not put it on unless you win an award. Your resume should reflect your major involvements not just exams you have taken (the reason that the AMC is not on my resume).

“Your resume should reflect your major involvements not just exams you have taken”

Lol, tell that to the College Board.

Taking an exam is a means to an end.

My certificate says “Certificate of Recognition” = does this basically mean “lol u tried” or?

Basically, honestly don’t put it on unless you are desperate.

Do Put It On

Porque, Philovitist?

Agreed with Philovitist, do put it on. But of course, if you have more important things you should list those first.

Does this apply to all minor school awards?
For example, if I won “Best President” in our school’s Presidential March Madness thing or best essay in my English class, should I try to work that into my app somehow? They seem really minor now that I’ve written it out lol.
