Let's say I like both colleges equally, but one of them is Ivy, so I want to give it a shot through ED 1. If this school rejects me by mid December, can I apply ED 2 to this other school whose deadline isn't until mid January?

Yes a rejection will release you to apply to any other program.

Thanks! :)

Be sure you coordinate this with your counselor, though. Many schools are on break by the time EDI decisions roll in and might not resume until after the EDII deadline. The counselor must sign the ED Agreement as part of your EDII submission and counselors are not supposed to have two ED agreements outstanding for an applicant at the same time, so the counselor may have to submit your ED Agreement over the winter break to make this work.

Even a deferral from ED1 will allow you to apply ED2. That’s kind of the nightmare scenario, you still have a shot at ED1, so what do you do with ED2? A discrete phone call on the part of your GC might help you make that decision.

If my top two schools both have ED1 only but one of their ED deadlines is not until January. Can I apply Ed1 to the nov. 1 deadline, and if I get rejected apply ED to the other school?

The rule is that you can have only one ED application pending at a time. So long as that’s what you’re planning, you’ll be fine.
