Can I apply for FASFA if my mom is an Illegal Immigrant?

I was wondering if I could still apply for FASFA if my mother was an illegal immigrant?
And no, she does not pay taxes (since she can't get a job here anyways).
I do believe my father was a Legal Immigrant, but he is deceased.

I know joining the military is an alternative, but in all truth, im am not a military type of person. But I am willing to take that path if there is no other way to pay for college.

Thank you in advance.

Holy cow…this has to be a banner week for threads about undocumented aliens and college! Anyway, are you a US citizen or permanent resident? If so, you can file FAFSA with your SSN, but enter 0’s for you mother’s if she doesn’t have one and “will not file” as the tax status. How exactly are you two living with no income? You’ll have to be prepared to explain that!

If you’re also illegal then you can’t file FAFSA. Depending on your state, you might be eligible for some funding there.

Oh sorry, I haven’t seen any of the other threads. Just joined ^^;;

Yes, I am a resident of the U.S.

Actually I don’t know the specifics, but Im currently living on Social security.

Hey check out my post I think it has the answer you are looking for. Same situation (almost) as you

Yes, there is a whole thread that goes into detail about the situation. In short, yes, if you have US citizenship, you can get federal aid. You can fill out the FAFSA with zeros for you mother’s ssn and if she paid no taxes, that should be indicated. Her income, to the best that you can reconstruct it for 2010 is needed too along with any savings and assets requested on the form.

I would think that the OP’s situation is potentially different from Anglepower because the OP may have a deceased parent who was a citizen. In some cases, such as the state of AZ, I think many undocumented parents would be disinclined to put their name and address on a form filled in with zeros for a ss#, even if that information isn’t supposed to be shared in a manner that invites the INS to pay a visit, it does create a document that indicates the parent is not a citizen or permanent resident.

If you have no income, are you living with another family member? You may want to contact an immigration attorney to see if there is a way for you to file using your father’s information as a deceased parent or, if you are still a minor, getting custody awarded to a relative who is a citizen or legal resident, that way you could file as an independent without revealing your mother’s information.
