All UCs have an [American History and Institutions](http://registrar.berkeley.edu/?PageID=ahi.html) requirement. Many students fulfill this requirement with a US history course in high school or sufficiently high score on a SAT subject or AP test on US history; transferable community college courses can also be used.

Berkeley has an [American Cultures](http://americancultures.berkeley.edu/students.html) requirement. Berkeley courses fulfilling this requirement are typically (but not always) suffixed with the letters “AC”. The referenced web page indicates that some community college courses listed on assist.org can fulfill this requirement.

In addition, each college (e.g. [Letters and Science](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirements/intro.html), Engineering, Chemistry, Business Administration, Environmental Design, and Natural Resources) has its own requirements. Of course, each major has its own requirements as well.
