Can I ask for a closer interview?

A Cornell alumnus contacted me and would like to interview me. However, he lives 1.5 away, and I don't have the capacity to travel that far (my unreliable car gets 12 miles per gallon and I am continually broke).

I know there are other Cornell alumni in my local area, but I guess they're not interviewers. Other people I know who are in the CAS say that they never got interviewed. Is there any way I can ask for an interview closer to home? Is it worth borrowing a car and driving that far for a 30 minute interview?

I would contact Cornell to ask for someone closer by. Explain to them of your situation, I am sure they would be understanding. If they couldn’t find someone closer, maybe the interview could be conducted over the phone. Cornell’s interview is more informational and it’s a good way to find out more about Cornell. I would email the interviewer also and explain to him your situation.

I don’t like the idea of borrowing someone else’s car, it’s too much liability.

I would not contact Cornell - but would contact the alumnus (either by email or by telephone) with whom you are meeting. Remember, this is not an “interview”, but an information session. The alumnus can put you in touch with whomever is responsible for assigning alumni to students. As an alternative, you could have the information session by telephone. If you have anything new to report to Cornell or have any other information that you believe would enhance your application, make sure to have the information session as soon as possible.

What CornellGrad said would be correct. Contacting the alumnus would be the better of the two. I suggest by phone because it would be faster, not sure when your interview is but if you email him, hey may potentially get it late.

Thanks for the advice!
