Well I heard back from NYU today and I got rejected. I was kind of shocked... I mean I was almost certain that I would get in. And I was thinking... maybe I was overqualified and they knew I wouldn't accept an offer of admissions?

Stats:

avg senior year so far 98.7
^^ weighted
Not sure about freshman and sophmore years off the top of my head... but I've pretty much always had unweighted As in everything

Taking 5 APs 3 honors this year and I had 4 APs and 4 honors last year (junior)

president and vice-president of two clubs etc

Yeah, they must have thought you would never go, because you really are too qualified for them! What school did you apply to (and what major did you say you were interested in)? Also, what kind of high school do you go to? (public/private, competitive, etc).

Yea I mean NYU is a great school so I feel arrogant saying that I'm too qualified but anyway..
Well I want to major in Math so I applied to CAS and I go to a catholic school... about 400 in the graduating class... not many kids go to ivies from my school-- one a year is about average. So, the school isn't that competitive. I'd say there are about 4-5 kids including myself who are "ivy material" but most kids go to state schools or places in state (sometimes b/c of financial issues)

Thanks Anna Molly!
I'd be happy to go to NYU because as I said it is a great school.. I was just surprised that I didn't get in so I was talking with a friend of mine who got accepted from my school (she had like mid 1700 SATs and took about 2 APs this year and 1 last year) and she had the idea maybe you had too much stuff.. so i figured id bounce the idea off you guys here

Sorry about the news gukki5, but you really do seem overqualified. Also, I wasn't aware that NYU even sent rejections this early so thats surprising. Congrats on Yale as well!

Oh yea I didn't get a letter in the mail someone called my mom and told her. She went to NYU and is very involved at the school and knows a lot of people; so someone she knows called and told her.

Wow, I wish I had that kind of connection. Feel free to drop my name by, haha. Don't worry, you're obviously headed for great things either way.

gukki, you most certainly are more than qualified, and it's not unheard of for a school that pretty much knows a kid isn't going to attend, to reject them first to keep their numbers up. I never filled out that part of the application that asked "where else are you applying?"

That said, I guess even an uver qualified student can rub an Adcom the wrong way, but I'm assuming you didn't write an essay about wanting to sartt a Natzi nostalgia club or something?

Community service: I'm the pantry manager at a food pantry (been involved with the pantry since 8th grade)

ECs: Pres of model congress and vice pres of jsa and a couple others that I'm just a member of

Essay: The main essay was about how one needs to approach the study of history in the frame of mind in which the events took place... that was the general idea and I talked a lot about Gettysburg

I don't really remember my exact answers for the short answers but I talked about my interest in opera, and my independent study of Linear Algebra, love of learning etc.. stuff like that

Yea I heard they only accepted 3000 this year instead of the normal 5000 or w/e the numbers are

wow, that was a dumb move on NYU's part. So what if a student is overqualified. Qualifications aren't the only things involved in making a college decision. They could offer scholarships to lure those over qualified students into their school. It could really help the student and his/her family save up for grad school tuition, if he or she decides to go.

There is no such thing as overqualified for a school. NYU accepts kids all the time with scores even better than yours. For some reason, they just didn't see a fit with you, who knows why. But is anyone else a bit suspicious about the telephone call form of notification? Just because Mom is involved in the school...I don't know...seems a little odd to me. But that's just me...

I've seen perfect scores get rejected from schools like this; it's nothing new. There was obviously something that they didn't like. I've never heard of schools rejecting people because they knew they wouldn't go (especially a school like NYU).

With highly competetive schools, it can just be a dart game. You probably made the short list, but ended up off mark. These schools try to balance their diversity as far as academics, geographics, ethnicity and philosophy. It just proves that you never know from year to year what they will pull from their applicant pool. It is frustrating for uber students as well as very bright and talented students who don't necessarily test well, but bring a lot to the table. I'm really sorry, but Yale sounds pretty good!!!!

that's true jml...but NYU has the GSP program for the kids that just miss...I can't imagine he wouldn't have qualified for that??? I think somethings up, maybe even a missing document or deadline?

I don't think NYU is that of a low-caliber school to reject top students just b/c it thinks that those students will not be attending NYU even if they're admitted.

Also, I'm a bit skeptical about what gukki5 has to say, judging from his posts on Yale forum. The whole "someone called my mom and told her" sounds very fishy..
