Can I ask to be deferred?

If I applied ED somewhere and would like to instead undergo regular decision, can I request to be deferred BEFORE the notification date?

Also, are there any repercussions to this? I know that when someone decides to forgo his Early Decision agreement UPON admission that he may be blacklisted by other schools. Would this apply to my situation?

Before decisions are released, you can ask to be moved from the ED pool to the RD pool.

I believe.

You can certainly call them on Monday and ask.

This is not a deferral. Write them and ask to be moved to RD. Happens all the time.

I asked the school if they were willing to accommodate the change and they said it would be fine. However I’m still worried about the school notifying other institutions about this and getting blacklisted at other places I’m applying to. What should I do?

You should stop worrying about that.

If you change from ED to RD, you have no issues with other colleges and universities. And your formerly ED institution doesn’t have any issues, either.

askjeeves: you give way too much power to the college. You forget that if they admit you, they will bust their butts to try to woo you and get you to matriculate. It’s a two-way courtship. You don’t set up that kind of foundation by trying to sabotage applicants now do you?
