i’m torn between teaching and practicing medicine. help
A good friend of mine got his PA degree a few years ago. He works as a PA and teaches part-time at a 4-year university. In fact, he teaches the son of a friend I’ve known since childhood.
It’s possible.
But your comm college may not pay a living wage. (Many cobble together random courses, sometimes, at several cc.)And you don’t need a PA degree, per se, to teach the early basic courses. You do need expertise in that. Why not look at what a cc would expect in training, what opportunities, what pay structure.
Exactly. Our local CC pays $1,500 adjunct instructors per semester class. Not sure how much a full-time prof makes, or if there are even any of those left at the CC level. Do your research at your local CC(s), but I expect you would make a much higher salary as a PA. Perhaps you could work as a PA and teach a class on the side. Good luck.
Once you’ve been working as a Physician’s Assistant, you’ll be qualified to teach in PA programs at any uni that offers them. For example, go to the jobs listings on the Chronicle of Higher Education website, and type in Physician’s Assistant for keywords. You’ll get faculty listings, both for adjuncts and full time, so you can see what you’d need to do in order to get such a job. So out of a PA program, usually with some PA work experience, you’ll be able to pick your path.
