I got this letter supposedly written by Malcolm Baker, class of 91, and the letter encourages freshman students to try out for rowing. Can I be a rower even though I have had no experience?

Yes you definitely can. My roommate from last year was a recruited rower, and he told me that a few people who had no experience joined the team. Apparently it was only a few because most people realized how much of an insanely large time committment it was and decided against it haha.

oh thanx for your answer

I strongly suggest you try out for crew, Its really fun and rewarding beating up on all the other ivies. And there are a lot of olympic rowers now who didn't start rowing until college. and also don't think you have to be seven feet tall, sure it helps but there are plenty of incredible short rowers out there.

why doesn't brown have a light-weight men's rowing team?

seems like you have to be at least 6' to join.... kinda sucks

How many hours a week could a novice rower expect to put into it, on average?

im not really sure. I do know that my roommate practiced with the team for a minimum of 2 hours nearly every day...maybe more

I really suggest that you try crew. I mean, the worst case is you tried something completely different than anything you've ever done and found that it just wasn't for you.

Is crew a large recruiting sport at Brown and if recruited how much help can it help me get in?
i have been rowing for about three years, have good erg times, and row for a nationally recognized team over the summer. i am also 6'3 and will be a junior.
thanks.
