Can I be accepted to regular school if rejected from program?

I applied to the engineering program at Brown. If I don't get in, can I be accepted to the regular school?

First, ask yourself if it is more important for you that you earn a degree in engineering, or that you have a chance to study anything at all at Brown?

If engineering is what is important to you, you need to make certain that you are also applying to other institutions with decent engineering programs.

If you don’t care what you study, so long as it is at Brown (assuming you are admitted), then you need to pick up the phone and call them about how you can apply to other divisions of the university.

If what you really want to ask is “If I get into another division and I do really well in a pre-engineering sequence, can I transfer into the engineering division after my first year?” then you need to ask that question while you have the Brown admissions office on the phone.

You may be able to select another major. My son was able to do this with a school, just over the phone. Admissions said, “Pick another major” and when he did, they told him he was in. After considering it for a few months, he decided that a major mattered more to him than a school, so he went with his second choice school.

I’m really just undecided as to what I want to major in, however, engineering is looking more and more desirable to me. But, if I am not accepted into the program, it really would not matter to me. I’m definitely open to do other things and I really would love to study at Brown. I’m just worried that if they do not admit me to the program, that takes away my other chances of getting into the school. Do you know if this is true?

Does the Brown web page list the criteria for the engineering program? Is it different from the other majors? Ask this question on the Brown board, under colleges.
