Can I call college admissions and ask them why I was deferred?

This was my safety school, so their decision makes no sense.

The consensus on here seems to be not to call, because they likely won’t tell you anyway.

Edit: However, if you post with specifics here, some of the more knowledgeable posters might be able to guess as to why you were deferred.

However, your GC might be able to gain some insight from the AO depending on the strength of the relationship.

nvm

Is there any chance it could be because I missed my css profile deadline? I found out about it already two weeks too late and called the financial office. The lady there told me that I could still submit it, but it wouldn’t make the Early action 1 deadline. I got deferred from early action 1 to regular decision disregarding early action 2.

Also I picked engineering as a major which I feel was a mistake. I’m not even that interested in the field, but I didn’t think the major on the application really mattered that much.

I have a 3.5 gpa (u.w), 1670 sat and decent e.c.'s

Depending on what school you applied to, the major you choose on the application is a big deal. Some schools admit you to a particular school inside of their university (i.e. Krannert School of Management inside Purdue University) and it is very hard to switch schools once you’ve been admitted. Other schools like Case Western allow you to change your major to anything you want.

What school was this? A 1670 SAT is on the lower side so I’m thinking that this may be part of the reason of your deferral. You may also have been deferred for missing the CSS profile deadline, but this is a good thing as it means that you’ll have a shot at FA if you get accepted RD.

Show interest :)

@stressin247‌: I wouldn’t do so, particularly if you still hope to be admitted, since it mght be very difficult to ask your question without conveying an attitude that they made a mistake (and, therefore, you know better).

In addition – and I understand this is a stressful time for you – your post that initiated this thread said: “This was my safety school, so their decision makes no sense.” Wow, can you appreciate the arrogance in that statement? Isn’t it their prerogative – and their responsibility – to asses your qualifications and potential? I raise this point not to be critical, but because, should you decide to call this university, you do NOT want to convey that resentfulness!

I’m aware of that. I’m probably not going to call since this school is far too expensive anyway. I’m starting to get worried now. I had no idea that the major you put on the application was such a big deal.

Your safety school is too expensive? Do you know a safety should be assured admission, a place you would be happy to attend, and affordable?
