i only have 40 hrs of shadowing and was wondering if i should call random doctors and ask them to shadow. is that creepy? i feel like it is..

No, texting random doctors would be creepy. Calling is definitely a good way to go about it but asking the doctor in person would seal the deal.

^what? who said OP was gonna text any docs?

^hahaha i think that was a joke. calling to express interest would be great.

Just contact the local medical society. They have programs for lay people to get to know health care providers and hopefully, become more understanding of the issues. Reporters, lawyers do this in the Harris County Medical Society in Houston.
They should have a way of letting you know who is available to take on students. You can even have your choice of the specialties you will be matched with.
A lot of doctors welcome your interest in the field and would be thrilled to have you tag along.
But do shadow different fields. An opthalmologist versus a general surgeon are so far apart that you don’t consider them to be in the same profession.
Good luck to you.

i had the same problem as u until two weeks ago. if u volunteer at a hospital, ask a resident whom you should talk to for shadowing. Residents really know more about shadowing than others in the hospital because of their experiences which are quite recent ( one or two years ago) if you think about it. I talked to a resident and she gave me the number of a head doctor who takes care of all the shadowing going on in the hospital. She also told me that if I call her, then she’ll probably look at my stats and grades etc. and then ask me who I want to shadow, how many hours etc. So, try talking to a resident and ask them. Trust me, they really do help a lot:)

I shadowed a Cardiologist this year. And it was pretty easy to get to shadow because he’s my grandpa’s doctor. I guess if you know a doctor then ask him if u can shadow or as him if he knows anyone else that he can follow. Also don’t be afraid to ask them because the doctors love to see a school student taking interest in the Medical Field at such a young age.
