Can I change a class from Letter Grade to P/NP after deadline?

Hi,

I am currently taking an Econ prerequisite for a letter grade, but would really like to change it to a Pass/No Pass grade because I did horrible on my second midterm. I believe the deadline to change a letter grade to Pass/No Pass date has passed. Is there anything I can do to still try to change this? Can I speak with my GSI or Prof and try to get an approval code or something? Do you or someone you know been in a similar situation? What did they do?

Friday, April 4th was the last day to change to P/NP from Letter Grade, so you did indeed miss the deadline.

You will need to speak to one of the L&S Academic Deans in order to get a special exemption. Be prepared to justify yourself to them.

Be aware that taking prerequisites -- even if it's not directly related to your degree, such as if it's a required class for med school applications, or for law school, or directly related to the graduate degree you want to pursue -- on a P/NP basis is generally frowned upon.

Are you sure that you can't work with your professor to make up for it? Are you sure it will hurt you as much as you think it will?

I am failing the class pretty badly, so yes, I am sure I want to have this changed. Grad school right now is a maybe option, but its not something I am whole heartedly trying to pursue, so I don't really care about how it will look to grad schools.

I just went and spoke with the Econ advisor. She asked me if there are any extenuating circumstances (i.e. death in family, mono, etc.), that resulted in me making this decision now. I told her no. She said I can go talk to L&S advisor, and they will ask me the same thing. I have no idea how to justify myself. (Only thing I can think of is I got gastroentinitis about a week ago right before my midterm, and I can provide documentation for it from the Tang Center).

They make very few exceptions. The damn bureaucracy has no heart.

Do you know how strict they are with providing exceptions. For example, how severe would a medical illness have to be?

Documentation is a good thing in these cases.

They are pretty serious about deadlines. It is nearly impossible to get an appointment with a Dean unless you have a compelling reason to begin with. Maybe if your gastro probs were caused by stress and you were seeking counseling to deal with an ongoing problem they might hear you out. How about talking to your professor and seeing if you can take an incomplete? Then, come back (when your health isn't compromising your academic performance) and finish the class for a passing grade. Your professor is likely to be far more flexible than the dean. If you do not need that class, ever, you can actually request a frozen incomplete. You will not be able to take the class over for a grade and it will stay on your transcript as an incomplete, but will not be figured into your overall GPA.
