If i get into a UC with TAG for one major, can i switch to another once im in the school?

depends on the school and the major ur switching from and the major ur switching to…

im gonna major in Community and Regional Development but if i dont like it, i was wondering if i could switch into like a Social Science major

you never know dude, you might not be able to. idk much about community and regional devel. but sometimes ppl do get screwed when they go to apply for the other major…i think through the pre reqs you have to do that you should be able to tell if u like it or not

Depends on the school. For example, at UCD, you can switch after 1 quarter.

What about this TAG scenario: my younger bro is a chemical engineering major and wants to attend UCSB. However, UCSB doesn’t do TAG for chemical engineering. Should he TAG as a chemistry major but when it comes to apply in November, he’ll apply as a chemical engineer for his primary major and as a secondary major chemistry?

Anyone ever heard of someone doing this or is there something wrong with this plan?

^my counselor made sure to warn me several times that i had to apply with the major i put on the TAG or the TAG would be revoked when they saw that i had put another major.
i would say no go.

Thanks redoplease!

You can change majors once your are accepted and attending the UC

However in the application process if you choose to change majors then it would revoke your TAG and you would need to be re-evaluated

Sure, if one changed to a related major but not a whole different department unless under extreme circumstances. The UC’s are impacted and more strict about this now. They are sick of young students thinking they are clever attempting to unjustifiably switch college departments once they are accepted. Not only does it annoy those who work and teach but one would lose face and a tarnished reputation is a hard thing to regain in academia.

You can change majors once you transfer but if you put a different major when applying in november compared to your TAG, your guaranteed admission does not apply for that major.

kmazza that would be hard to enforce - remember a great MANY people change their minds LEGITIMATELY during their college time. I think it’d that much more sense that a transfer student gets into a UC, and quickly decides they wish to be in another major… why?

When you’re at a CCC, you’re focused on prereqs - mostly general stuff such as Physics, chem, math. Take Computer Science guys for example - they spend their time doing more abstract programming. What if I went into EE and decided I hated low-level programming and changed to comsci? Or the other way around? Is that bad?

To be honest I’m not even sure which I prefer yet because at my school there are no EECS type of classes.

I see no harm whatsoever in diversifying your interests as long as you accomplish something. :)

UC’s accept that not everyone has a clear understanding of what they want to major in. That is one reason why they would rather many students attend a CCC first so they are more prepared and have a better idea.

Lets take Cal for example…they don’t care how long it takes to transfer to upper division but when you get there they want you out in two years. It is fine to say claim Engineering-Undeclared and take an EE class but find out after a semester you would rather do comp sci. As you mentioned the majority of lower division math, chem, and physics is standard but engineering paths are quite distinct. If one waited to say senior year status to change major there is high probability it would be rejected.

It is not fine if you wanted to be in the CoE but claimed a major with L&S. It would be very easy to catch that since you have to fill out a change of major form and write a petition by February to be reviewed. Many instructors and admins have dealt with students for years and know many if not all of the moderately clever games students try.

On the state level CalPoly is the same way as they ideally want you out in two years or your butt is taking up a potential seat. They actually have an interesting way of dealing with the issue. One reason is because it is a Poly-Tech Institute and another is due to students trying to switch from one major to another. What they do is have a particular major lets say for example Earth Science. Maybe I decide after I am accepted I want to switch to Engineering…well that would be out of the question but I would be allowed to take engineering classes still. Ok, well what if I did 2 quarters and decided maybe I wanted to change my major to geology, geography, environmental science or what have you. What they do is only offer certain majors ie Earth Science and all the rest such as the ones just listed are only available as a minor.
