Hi,

I recently applied Early Action to CU Boulder. In my common application it asked for a major. I put down College Of Communications and to focus on Journalism. I am wondering if it is possible to change majors? I am undecided on a major and just put that down as a possibility, but I don't really think I want to major in that. Does it matter what college you get accepted into? Can you change it once you get accepted?

You can change your major, but if you’re switching between colleges it’s a real pain. As long as you’re not planning to switch into the school of engineering you should be fine. Really would have been best to select undeclared though…

What happens if you switch into the college of engineering?

I don’t want so switch to engineering, so I think I’m good

@1234pj4321, the Engineering school at CU is much, much more selective then arts and sciences. If you apply Arts and Sciences you really can’t just transfer into engineering right away. You’d have to demonstrate scholastic ability. (Unless your grades and test scores are really up there).

The journalism major is now part of the new College of Media, Communication and Information. I’d stay in it if you get accepted. A lot of your first year courses will be core requirements anyway and the new courses look interesting. Plus, it will be much easier to switch out than to switch in. It’s been pretty competitive to get into the journalism program and especially the advertising program. They also have a residence hall that offers the intro classes in small sections instead of the big lecture-style course.
