Hi College Confidential, I'm a student who is just graduating from high school and looking to take the community college route in order to get into my dream school, UC Berkeley. I'm extremely passionate about English and would love to major in it, but the problem is that my CC is lacking in articulated courses that will fulfill the lower division requirements. All of the CCs within reasonable driving distance bring up the same problem.

But they do provide all of the necessary courses in Anthropology, a subject I'm really interested in, although I wouldn't say that I share the same enthusiasm for it that I do with English. I was thinking that for my second year of college I would spend it taking as many English and Anthropology courses as possible (due to the APs I took an high school, I'll be done with the IGETC in my first year, so it'll give me a little freedom). Hopefully it would show that, despite the fact that I couldn't take the necessary English lower division classes, that I would still be prepared for the upper division section because of my exposure to the other classes in that subject, and the Anthropology courses would make my application look good as far as finishing all the pre-reqs for a major (just for the sole person of increasing my acceptance rate).

Besides, they're both in the College of Letters and Sciences. It shouldn't be too hard to change majors.

English is not impacted at Cal, so you’ll be able to switch and declare as soon as you finish the lower div reqs.

So a lack of pre-reqs for my major won’t be a big deal against me on my application because it isn’t impacted? Couldn’t I then just apply as an English major, or should I still take the Anthropology route as a backup?

Suppose you were admitted to Cal as an anthropology major, you simply have finish the lower division reqs for english, fill out a change of major form and your major will be switched to english. If you apply to Cal as an english major, you will be competing with others who’ve finished more or all of their pre-reqs because their cc provides it.

If you transfer and the cc you are attending does not offer specific prereq’s it will not affect you. PLEASE call the Cal admission office; you will get way too many opinions here. I am telling you not something of opinion but of experience. However, the best way to get an answer is from Cal.

But isn’t Cal also strict with graduating on time?! Don’t they kick you out after a certain date has passed?

^^I agree, I really should talk to a counselor from Cal, or even my CC, but it’s so freaking impossible to get a hold of anyone! I’m lucky that I’m going to be an athlete for my college (gives me priority for getting classes) and that I knew plenty of friends who had already spent their first year at the school who helped me be heard in what classes I chose, but it’s frustrating that I can’t talk to someone who can advise me a two-year plan! I’ve basically had to abuse the usage of college confidential, Assist, the IGETC sheet, Berkeley’s transfer page, talking to teachers at my high school, and getting advice from students in order to make all of my community college related decisions so far.
