hi, i applied to ucsc as a biology major and was wondering if it is possible to switch my major to computer engineering once i register. if it is possible, how difficult is it to do? Thanks CC community.

If you’re a freshman then it probably wouldn’t be an issue so long as complete got the required courses for admission into the Jack Baskin School of Engineering with a competitive GPA for your intended major. Not entirely sure how the process works because I am not (yet) a UCSC transfer student, but I plan on it! Good luck!

Log in with your Cruz ID and password to https://www.admissions.ucsb.edu/applicant/index.asp and then under one of the tabs you will find a link to change your major. All majors might not be available, in that case, you can send an email to the Admissions dept. and ask if that one is available for you.

oh cool, so that will change my major automatically? Just wondering because it says on their website that if you did not apply for engineering directly, you have to apply to the Baskin School of Engineering once you start attending in the fall. So if I don’t get admitted that would suck and would I just have to take general classes for a whole year since I don’t want to do biology?

I’m not sure if it’s automatic, though I have heard changing your major (especially since your a freshman) isn’t too difficult at UCSC (a tour guide told me this). You’re going to need G.E. courses anyways, so there’s no harm in just doing that for your first quarter. Check with Baskin to see if you need any prerequisite courses in order to apply.
