Can I change my mind about what school to attend after the May 1 deadline?

I committed and payed the $200 enrollment deposit to a school on May 1st. However, I changed my mind and want to attend a different college. I contacted the college I want to go to now and they granted me an extension and said that I can still enroll. I don’t think they know I already committed to a college yet though. Am I legally allowed to change my mind after May 1st after depositing? I know I will be losing my $200 deposit but that’s okay.
Also, do I have to contact the first school I made the deposit immediately that I changed my mind? I might change my mind again and choose the first school but then I risk losing my spot. Reason for this is that the other college said they are awarding me a scholarship but I won’t get the full details until late July. They don’t know how much I will exactly be getting or if I’m full eligible yet though so depending on the amount it might tip the scale on my decision.

Yes, you’re legally allowed to switch schools as long as you know you’ll lose your deposit. If you’re not sure you want to switch, though, I wouldn’t—if you do switch, school number one definitely will not save your spot for you.

Legally they can’t compel you to come. You will most likely lose your deposit.

You really want to leave your decision hanging until July? That would have been a non-starter for both my Ds (by their choices and mine).

The new school that you are considering appears to have fallen short of its enrolment goals if they are allowing you a late decision.

I really don’t want to lose my spot on school number 1 because I might not even qualify for the scholarship to school number 2 or receive a small amount. Can I ask either school to consider me for the Spring semester? The second school said they have very few seats left but gave me an extension since they thought I was a great fit.

The scholarship isn’t actually by the school itself but it is by the a state program. School number 1 doesn’t qualify since it is in a different state.

Spring semester admits get much less money for merit (if any). You can ask.

If I were you I’d wait and see if I get a slot in school 2. At that point you can switch. If there is no slot in 2, then go to the school you committed to.

Don’t do anything. Take wait and see position. Don’t give up your spot at school 1 until school 2 is a sure thing.

@“Erin’s Dad”

I didn’t get any merit aid for either schools. I only got grants.

The second school did not fall short of enrollment goals. The admission representative I emailed told me that there are very few seats left. I looked up how many were currently enrolled and the current enrollment actually exceeded their enrollment goals by a lot. It will be their biggest class.

Also check with your current HS. At my daughter’s HS, final transcripts can only be sent to one school. If both schools will need final transcripts, that may be a problem if trying to hold a spot at both schools until July.

I agree with the others above. Don’t bail on school #1 until school #2 is a lock.

School #2 must assume that you were accepted somewhere else already given the usually admissions calendar.

Will I still be able to commit to school #2 after July? I won’t get the scholarship confirmation details till mid to late July.
They already met(actually exceeded) their enrollment goal so I’m scared they won’t.

You need to let #2 know that they are your first choice, but that you will not be able to commit until you have the scholarship confirmed. This essentially is a wait-list situation. Hang onto your enrollment at #1 until you are certain about the money for #2.

If #2 cannot wait until you know that the money is there, then you don’t want them after all.
