can i consider UCLA a safe match?

assuming that my extra-curriculars and essays are substantial...

GPA: 3.85 UW / 4.50 W
Rank: Top Decile
SAT I: 760 M/740 V/720 W
SAT II: 800 Math 2C/720 Physics/700 Chemistry
A-G Course Load: 70 Semester Units

of Weighted Classes Taken: 18

lol probably! I would wish you good luck but you won't need any

schoolismylife:

Assuming you are a California resident,
UCLA: Safe Match

eh i dont feel so confident about giving out safe matches, cuz people with high statistics don't always get in. if you think you are ivy material, then UCLA is probably a safe match.

You are very strong (obviously) but I would not say you are a safe match. UCLA and Cal reject plenty of kids w/ high stats every year. Good luck though!

schoolismylife:

Now that I reconsider your weighted GPA and SAT I/II scores, they aren't any higher than the typical "UCLA: Match" in-state applicant...

Assuming you are a California resident,
UCLA: Match

school:

what is your writing score? The UC's look at them, and LA prefers 700+ from unhooked candidates.

flopsy, are you saying that typical UCLA students get a 2220 on their SAT I? and is 4.5 the average weighted GPA? i highly doubt it.

bluebayou, my writing score was a 720W and 12 Essay

You didn't calculate your UC GPA correctly. It's pretty much impossible to get a 4.5, especially if your unweighted isn't 4.0.

I vote for safe match.

schoolismylife:

No. To be a stable Match for UCLA, you have to be slightly above the average applicant, which you are, but you lack the strong hook of a Safe Match. UCLA and UCB reject plenty of kids with your stats every year.

UCLA: Match

sure if you're a california resident

i can almost guarantee u will get in. the uc's actually use a mathematical formula to admit students based on ur gpa, ap/honors, and sat scores. this formula assigns u a number, and eveyrone is ranked top to bottom. the people at the top are automatically in (xc's aren't considered at all for these ppl) and this group makes up a majority of the admits. then for the people who aren't auto in by the formula, THEN they start looking at essays and stuff. this is according to a us news and world report article where they went behind the scenes to look at the admissions process. ur stats are definitely good enough for ucla. it's a lock as a safety.

this is confirmed by what happens at my public CA high school. we have like 10 thousand ppl apply to ucla every year from our school. EVERYONE within a certain GPA and SAT range are in. as in EVERYONE. this is like 30+ people every single year. and ur stats are WELL within this range. so count ucla in, and gl on ur other schools.

Berkeley and UCLA are not that forumlaic -- altho the other UC's are, and San Diego has stated so publicly. Indeed, if you read thru the John Moore's reports a couple of years ago (on UCOP website), you'll note where auto-admits (based on two readings) at both schools were denied and replaced with "more desirable" candidates.

It also depends on the school's offerings....If the OP's school offers 20 AP courses, and the OP took zero.....strength of schedule is lower than colleagues. Thus, with the OP's stats, I would assume a 70-80% chance of admissions (safe-match)....obviously, with a 12 essay, the OP can write, but if the UC essay was on a risky topic, a reader could easily be turned off by the subject matter, and move the app to the deny pile.

i disagree. cal and ucla are very formulaic. however, even if it is not as formulaic as the other uc's, i believe that "schoolismylife" will get in for sure. he/she seems like a pretty intelligent person who will probably write good essays.

Perhaps, although intelligence =/= good essay writing. Also, how formulaic is formulaic? What are you comparing?

i thought the UC essays were not that big in the admissions process. it only helps if you're a borderline applicant.

school:

U R correct for every school but Berkeley and LA.
