Can I decline to transfer previous credits?

Hi all!

When I graduated high school in 2002, I went to a community college for nursing. This was not what I wanted to do and I didn't take things seriously. I failed and repeated a lot of classes and my GPA dropped down to a 2.31. After dropping out and working for a bit, I went on to transfer to another comm college where I got my degree in fashion design and graduated with a GPA of 3.75 in 2011.

As much as I love that field, it isn't really what I thought it would be and I want to attend school again for nursing. The thing is my initial college still has all of my grades on file and it isn't pretty in the least. Even with academic amnesty, my GPA would be ~2.70. And for a nursing program, the higher the GPA the better. Now that I live in a different county, I would like to transfer to that community college, but I don't want to transfer any credits. I'm not going to hide the fact that I went to another school (tempting, but not worth the risk), but I would like to retake all of my classes so I can: A) relearn things because its been 10+ years and B) execute a MUCH higher GPA.

Can I request them to not transfer any credits in? Please help and thanks!

Assuming you can get into your transfer/terminal degree program, they will always assess what prior credits will apply toward your graduation requirements. That said, once you’re in the new school, typically they are happy to let you retake courses at the new institution as well you typically will only have an institutional gpa. Case in point, I got a C in physics II from a summer class at a college ten years ago. I was given credit for it by my current school but my institutional gpa didn’t exist until I completed coursework at my new school. I retook physics II and got an A, now that transfer credit has been overridden and no longer counts toward my degree.

Oh, that definitely helped! I’ve been psyching myself out since it is winter break and I can’t talk to a academic advisor just yet. Your response makes plenty of sense and hopefully they let me do that! Especially since I’m paying out of pocket, haha. Thank you!
