I am thinking of getting a jaw surgery done and going to Haiti to volunteer during my gap year, if my request gets approved, but I am not completely sure yet.

My question is, am I allowed to send in the deposit on May 1st, and then decide later (sometime in June) if I want to defer 100%?

If that is not allowed, would I be able to request a deferral on May 1st when I send in my deposit, and then if plans change, cancel my deferral and enroll this fall?

Deferring for a gap year is just fine and is becoming increasingly common.

It’s one thing to defer enrollment when you are committed to UVa. It’s another thing to use deferral to buy yourself time to make a final decision when everyone else had until May 1st. I can’t stop you from doing it, but it is against the spirit of deferral.

I KNOW I will be going to UVA. I’m just not sure if I’ll be going this year or next.

And the reason I am trying to hold off my decision until after May 1st is because my surgeon and my orthodontist and I are supposed to meet in mid-June to plan my surgery. If they say the surgical process is going to take more than 1 year, I want to be able to delay the surgery until after undergrad and cancel the deferral and attend UVA this fall, but I won’t know for sure how long the surgery will take until June when I meet with the doctors. Also, I need to figure out all the paperwork for going to Haiti and I’m not sure how that will turn out by May 1st, either.

I guess I am “buying” time, but only because of the circumstances, not simply because I couldn’t make a decision like everyone else by May 1st.

This sounds like a reasonable reason for an exception, power. Write to the Dean of Admission, Greg Roberts, about your situation. I’m sure he’ll be fine with accommodating your request. I didn’t see a reference to a medical condition earlier in the thread…I may have missed that.

I was at UVA today and asked if you could ask for an extension on the decision
deadline. You can. It is usually done for those waiting to see their final
financial aid package but your case sound like a legitimate reason to ask for a
delay on the May 1st deadline…just call the Admissions Office and ask.
