Can I defer from multiple schools?

Hey guys, I'm currently a senior, planning on taking a gap year.

I was accepted to multiple schools that do NOT require me to submit a deposit this May (I would submit it next May and simply renew my application or whatever else). They'll still hold my spot.

Several of the schools have offered me merit scholarships, but they are competitive every year, meaning I will not necessarily get the same offer next year when I renew my application.

The choice for me boils down to scholarship money, but I don't want to make a commitment to an expensive school knowing they might not offer the same deal next year. I'm also sort of torn between three of them, regardless of money.

Is it legal/allowed/moral/etc. to defer from multiple schools? I asked my guidance counselor and he said it was okay, but I don't really trust his judgment because he's screwed things up before.

Also--my other option is just to not accept anything this year and reapply next year. This would be a hassle and I'd have to pay the application fees again, but I think I could get into all of the schools again anyway (no "reaches" in there). But I really don't want to have to do that.

Thanks!

Bump… Anyone?

I might try emailing the admissions officers and talking with them about it. They’ll be the ones who’d know!

Thanks…I’m afraid to tell them that I want to defer from multiple schools, though. I feel like that’s not something I should tell them, especially if I want to be considered for scholarships the second time around.

I’m not really sure…but I like how fitting your username is :)

i would ask them about what happens to your merit scholarship if you defer your enrollment without mention of possibly deferring multiple schools… you are technically holding up a spot in next year’s admits

Two of the schools told me that I would not necessarily be given the same scholarship, but that I would be reconsidered for the scholarships among next year’s applicant pool (because they are competitive merit scholarships). The third said the scholarship offer would roll over to next year.

Basically I know what happens with scholarships if I defer from one school, but I’m asking if it’s possible to defer from multiple schools without necessarily telling them. So that I can keep my options open. These are schools that generally accept more applicants than they expect to attend, so I don’t feel particularly guilty about holding a spot, but I just don’t want to get in trouble for it if I’m supposed to commit to a school THIS May.

Bump? Anyone, please? I don’t want to do something wrong…
