Can I do double major at UCB as a transfer student?

Does anyone know if I can do double major--Econ and Math--at UCB or not?

yes you can. im either doing that or triple majoring in stats as well.

Oh, triple major, you mean you are doing Math, Econ and Stats?
How long do you think it'll take you to finish them?

I'm pretty sure you can double major, but I think you need to have the prereqs done for both by the time you transfer.

Prerequisite courses are not a big issue because math is only IGETC plus several more math class. I'm just wondering if it will take me more than 3 years after I transfer.

I don't believe it's necessary to have the prerequisites of both majors completed by the time you transfer, just the prerequisites of the major you applied under. That said, it makes sense to take care of them as soon as possible, since you can't declare the second major without completing lower-division requirements.

Oh, and as far as time frame goes: I'm a spring admit that will be double-majoring in Econ and Poli Sci. Planning to graduate with my class, so I'm looking at ~1.5 years (including summer session). Advisers strongly urge against it... but it's possible.

I see. But since I have enough time, I think I might consider fulfill all the prerequisites by the time I transfer out.

Wow, 1.5 years. You are really carrying a heavy course load. Can you manage to mantain a competitive GPA?

Well, I hope so. The plan is to take around four courses a semester, which actually isn't too bad (based on the experiences of a few friends).

But why is your adviser "strongly urge against it?"

Look at the UCSD Math/Econ joint major on assist.org, the prereqs for Berkeley should be somewhat similar.

Don't look at UCLA's prereqs, since their Math/Econ is a B.S., not a B.A., and has more requirements.

keep in mind that you will have to graduate once u exceed 150 units as a double major at UCB.

Does that include the units transfered from a community college?

Not really.
I find that they only require 3 more math classes plus a CIS class.

yes it does include the units transferred from ccc only maximum of 70 will transfer

Then how can someone finish two majors within a total unit limit of 150?

yes, exactly, UCLA Math/Econ has the most prerequisites, that's what I said.

it will only take me 2 years.

You guys are really smart. I'm thinking that the heavy course load may drive me crazy. Besides, I would have to maintain a relatively competitive GPA to get into grad schools, which is extremely difficult in a school like UCB that has a notorious Grade deflation.

i don't think i'm that smart. it's just planning ahead. and if you think about it, most majrs have 8 upper division requirements. so a double major would be 4 classes a semester for 4 semesters for most cases.

But what really concerns me is not whether I'll be able to graduate in two years.
Because I'm thinking about going to Business or Law school after that, my GPA is crucial. But I've heard that it's really difficult to maintain a high GPA in UCB, is that true?
