Can I do IGETC?? Started off at a UC

Hi guys I’m currently at UCSB but due to some stuff going on at home right now, I want to start community college in the summer and finish my GEs and transfer to UCI which is closer to home. My main concern is whether I am eligible for IGETC to transfer? I think I read that since I started at a UC, I can’t do that and if so what do people in my situation usually do? My major is Spanish since I would like to become a Spanish teacher.

IGETC is only for CC students, so you’d have to look up the GE requirements at UCI and complete as many of those as possible at UCSB.

The thing is I’m hoping to enroll in a CC for Summer, Fall and Winter at a CC. I’m going to withdraw from UCSB.

There is a chance that your UCSB classes will count, although I am not sure.

So you’ll need to ask the transfer center at your CC what they’ll certify.

That said, you probably don’t need IGETC. The IGETC program is intended for kids that are not sure what campus they will intend. Each UC and CSU has slightly different requirements, IGETC is a common set they all agree to accept. But it sounds like you are pretty set on UCI. So look up their general-ed requirements, then use ASSIST to figure out which ones articulate for classes you need and haven’t already taken at UCSB.

You also ought to talk to an admission counselor (either at SB or Irvine) about whether you qualify for TAG, which would give you guaranteed admission. The UC TAG Matrix at http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/tag-matrix.pdf says

The 2nd paragraph implies that at least some students who have attended a UC previously are eligible for TAG at different campus. You will meet the definition of a CC transfer by the time you finish up at the CC, so the question is whether you need to meet that definition when you file the TAG; go ask a counselor. Also you have to have 30 semester units when you file the tag in the Fall. If you withdraw from UCSB and take summer school as you have planned, will you still have enough units?

edit: also it just occured to me you’re probably a frosh. If you withdraw now and then enroll at a CC as you wrote above, are you going to have enough units to enter UCI after 1 year? All UCs require xfer students to be juniors. The only way it sounds like your plan could work is if you have a lot of AP credit.

I am a freshman and here at UCSB I’ve completed 12 units so far and have 24 units from AP credit. So in total I have 36 units according to UCSB.

I’m confused about this whole transfer process to be honest. I thought IGETC would count as my General Ed and I would just take upper division classes at UCI? But yeah, I’m still going to talk to a counselor about all this stuff today.

You can satisfy the GE requirements at a UC either with IGETC or by taking transferable classes that meet the GE requirements for your college (Letters & Science or some other one) at that particular campus.
