Okay, so by next wednesday I have to figure out my classes. Is taking ap physics C(both eletricty and magnetism and mechanics) and ap chem possible? It will take up 3 periods (each meets 1 period every other day, 2 periods the other days). Anyone done this before? Is it overkill? I'm taking ap english, ap calc ab, ap gov, ap spanish as well

That's going to be a tough schedule, but if you should be able to pull it off if you put in the time/effort. First of all, Physics C, Chemistry and Calculus, at least at my school, involve a lot of homework - working problems to make sure you know the concepts. If you find math pretty easy and you have the willpower to stick to your schedule and not procrastinate (avoid senioritis), then if shouldn't be too bad. On the other hand, if you absolutely hate math and working problems, then you'll have a really hard time.
To add to your workload, AP US Govt and (I suspect) AP Spanish will require considerable outside school reading.

Your best bet is to talk to people at your school (current seniors?) who have taken a similar courseload, or at least a similar combination of classes and see what they say. The difficulty and workload of AP classes varies from school to school. At my school, I would say that schedule was doable, but that might not be the case at yours.

gov and spanish and english are the easy ones. Calc, physics and chem are the hard ones. I just go to a public school, so nothing extraordinarily hard.

i don't care wehre you go to school having ap english, ap calc ab, ap gov, ap spanish, ap physics C, and ap Chem is overkill. If you want to have a life next year, get rid of a couple. I would say out of those, AP gov is probably the least important, and wouldn't matter if you just didn't take (colleges would recognize your taking a very difficult schedule)

if i don't take ap gov I have to do community service, which I really won't have time for on top of my other commitments, I'm not quitting spanish after working my butt of for 4 years, I already turned in most of my ap english application, and I love English, calc is the next math class up, so it comes down to chem and physics

take physics if you had to choose one!

well i've taken reg. chem, so at least i could complete the trio with ap physics

My schedule this year is kind of close to what you're talking about. AP calc, english, government, and chem, but I'm taking AP Physics B (independent study though), not C, and only honors Spanish 4.
I've been doing fine so far...

spanish 5 is kind of a joke, it's like a 2nd year of spanish 4, not hard at all. I want to try to see if I can handle it, just because this will be my last oppurtunity to take it in hs since I'm a current junior

If you are considering going pre-med, I suggest keeping the AP physics and AP chemistry in your schedule. If not, the freshman year pre-med courses will be even more difficult than they usually are.

There are several summer programs for URMs planning on science careers. These include free ones such as Grinnell's, which has an application due in March. These would prepare you for your rigorous senior year curriculum and might open the door for your getting merit aid. Have you applied to any?

that was my other thought, since I'm thinking pre-med or pre-physical therapy, which have basically the same requirements.

it's not that bad actually... albeit i spread my ap's out but next year i'll have programming, latin, history, physics c, microecon, musictheory i believe

yea my schedule for my junior year is gonna be:
AP Biology
AP Chemistry
AP English Language and Composition
AP US History
Precalculus Honors
chemistry and biology meet 4 period in a week and have one period each for lab which meets once each week
everyone at my school thinks im crazy because AP bio is the hardest class at my school and chem is pretty hard too for alot of people but i think its easy in Honors Chem, hopefully i wont have any trouble in it next year
hopefully me and u will be able to pull it off next year celebrian25

Celebrian,

Since you are a URM interested in the sciences, have you signed up for Ventures Scholars? It has fee waivers, scholarships, and info about summer programs. Since you are taking a rigorous curriculum, I bet that your scores will qualify you. Here's the link:http://www.venturescholar.org/faq_scholars_families.html

I've changed my mind. I talked to my counselor, and he thinks 6 is too many, and based on the difficulty and homework load of these 2 classes, I've elected one of 2 paths, but i'm not sure which one

one:
ap calc ab
ap gov
ap english
ap spanish
ap chem
physics

two:
ap calc
ap english
ap gov
ap spanish
ap physics
advanced creative writing (study hall for 2nd semester)

plan 1 if u wanna become a doctor or wanna go into medicine

I'm a junior taking both AP Bio and AP Chem this year. Taking 2 AP sciences is definitely possible but it is a lot of work. At my school, AP Bio is the hardest class, and we get 1-2 hours of hw a night, sometimes more. I would ask current seniors how hard these classes are at your school. I wouldn't reccomend taking 2 AP sciences if you dont plan on majoring in science or if you have a lot of other hard classes and extracurricular activities.
