Can I do this or no way?

I accepted an offer of admission at college A), but my problem is that it's too expensive and I got a better scholarship at another college (which will still let me deposit). The tuition deadline for school A is August 1. Can I reject the offer of admission today and accept the other school (given that I have a good reason to do so?)?

Please please help me guys.

Call 'em up and ask if you can, but otherwise you should be fine (assuming of course that you didn’t apply ED to school A). All you’ll lose is your deposit, but I’m assuming it’s a pittance compared to the overall cost, and therefore worth the small loss in the long run.

First of all, dude you posted this really early in the morning than an hour later came back and bumped it. Few people are awake, and of those few, fewer are on CC.

EDIT:Nvm read thing wrong. Yeah I think you are in a pickle. You might just have to call them and see, but I doubt that you will be able to. Sorry

^Why not ZombieDante?

you will almost definitely lose your deposit from school A. I would be triple sure that you can still get into school B and the deadline to accept the scholarship has not passed before withdrawing from school A though. Get that in writing.

What vlines said - that’s an excellent point, to make 100% sure you can still get into school B and get the proffered scholarship. I don’t know why ZombieDante said you won’t be able to switch schools, as if you can still accept your offer of admission at school B, you should be more than fine.

^School B doesn’t know I accepted School A’s offer.

Accept school B before withdrawing from school A. I know a few people who sent in deposits at multiple schools and only decided when tuition was due/the year started. That’s the only way to be sure you can still attend school B.

The important part isn’t what they know about school A (it doesn’t matter), but if you’ll still be able to be admitted with the scholarship (we mention it in case it’s time sensitive/you somehow accidentally declined their offer of admission, not because you accepted elsewhere). As vlines said, get it in writing that you’ll get in and get the scholarship, then feel free to decline your offer of admission at school A and accept at B.

Cross-posted with Scutrules: Do what they said, and make sure you get the scholarship. It’s the best way to be safe.

And if you find that it is too late for B, but you are able to ascertain that the scholarship will be available for 2013 if you reapply, then take a Gap Year. Send a “thanks so very much, but I regret to inform you that my plans have changed” note to A, and don’t take classes anywhere for 2012-2013 so that you preserve your freshman status.
